NVIDIA says it uses frame color and motion data alongside information from the game engine, and gives developers controls for tuning the result. As of October 8, 2026, NVIDIA reports it available in NBA 2K27 on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and through GeForce NOW Ultimate. Other titles named at launch were announced as supporters, but that does not establish that they currently ship with DLSS 5.
What is NVIDIA DLSS 5?
NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 on March 16, 2026, describing it as a real-time neural-rendering model for adding photorealistic lighting and material detail to game imagery. The company says it can operate at up to 4K resolution. That is NVIDIA’s stated capability, not a guarantee of particular image quality or frame rate on every system. NVIDIA’s announcement
DLSS 5 is best understood as an image-rendering stage, not simply a new name for upscaling or frame generation. Its purpose is to change the visual treatment of a rendered frame. NVIDIA has not published a general independent benchmark establishing DLSS 5’s net performance impact across games and configurations.
How does DLSS 5 work?
NVIDIA’s September 2026 developer article describes DLSS 5 as a final neural-rendering stage in the game’s graphics pipeline. It takes the engine’s rendered image and other data—including color, motion vectors, geometry, textures, and lighting buffers—and uses a specialized model to infer lighting and material detail. NVIDIA says the model processes one frame in and produces one frame out, with the goal of keeping results temporally consistent. NVIDIA’s developer article

Because the effect is grounded in game content and engine data, NVIDIA says richer lighting inputs, such as ray-traced or path-traced lighting, can improve output accuracy. The company also says the model runs locally on a single RTX 50 Series GPU for the reported PC implementation. These are NVIDIA’s descriptions of the technology, not independent evaluations of its output in every game.
Can developers control how DLSS 5 changes a game?
NVIDIA says developers can choose among models, adjust Structure Intensity and Tone Intensity, apply semantic AI masking, and use engine-level masks on individual objects or groups of assets. These options are intended to help studios direct where and how the neural-rendering effect appears.

For NBA 2K27, NVIDIA says developer Visual Concepts used tone and style controls plus a per-pixel uplift mask while preserving scanned facial geometry. This is NVIDIA’s account of that game’s implementation; it does not demonstrate that every game will use the controls in the same way or that every player will prefer the resulting look.
What games support DLSS 5?
As of October 8, 2026, NVIDIA’s September developer article identifies NBA 2K27 as available with DLSS 5. NVIDIA’s March announcement also named studios and a broader set of games as supporters, with DLSS 5 expected in fall 2026. An announcement of support is not confirmation that a title has since launched the feature.

NVIDIA named Bethesda, CAPCOM, Hotta Studio, NetEase, NCSOFT, S-GAME, Tencent, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros. Games among the organizations supporting DLSS 5 at announcement. Bethesda’s Todd Howard said the studio was excited to work with the technology for Starfield and future Bethesda titles; that statement is a commitment, not proof of a current release in any particular game.
What GPU do you need for DLSS 5?
For local play in the currently reported implementation, NVIDIA specifies a GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop or laptop GPU. Its developer article does not say that a particular RTX 50 model, such as an RTX 5090, is required. The game must also implement DLSS 5; owning a compatible-generation GPU alone does not add the feature to unsupported titles.

NVIDIA has said it planned to expand official support to RTX 40 Series after further tuning performance on RTX 50 Series. Tom’s Hardware reported this plan on September 4, 2026, citing NVIDIA PR; it is not a confirmed rollout date or evidence that RTX 40 Series support is now generally available. Tom’s Hardware, September 4, 2026
For the reported cloud option, NVIDIA says GeForce NOW Ultimate members can use DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27 through NVIDIA-operated RTX 5080-powered cloud gaming rigs. That route does not require the player to own a local RTX 50 Series GPU, but it does depend on the service and supported game being available to them.

Does DLSS 5 change how games look?
It can. DLSS 5 is designed to add or alter lighting and material detail, so the output may look different from the source rendering. That difference is also the subject of debate: the Associated Press reported that some viewers criticized the launch demonstration for apparent facial changes and for seeming to alter the games’ artistic intent. NVIDIA responded that developers have detailed artistic control over the effect. The disagreement is real, but neither reaction establishes a universal result across games. Associated Press, March 2026
How noticeable or welcome the effect is depends on the game’s implementation and the developer’s tuning. NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang called DLSS 5 “the GPT moment for graphics” and said it blends hand-crafted rendering with generative AI while preserving artist control. Bethesda’s Todd Howard and CAPCOM executive producer Jun Takeuchi also expressed support for using the technology in their studios’ games. Those are company and developer positions, not independent findings about how every game will look.
Quick Recap
What DLSS 5 does not establish
- A universal performance gain: NVIDIA’s public announcement and developer article do not provide a general independent benchmark for frame-rate impact. Results would need to be measured for a specific game and configuration.
- Availability in every announced game: the launch partner list records announced support, not confirmed current availability in each listed title.
- A guaranteed visual outcome: NVIDIA describes developer controls, but a game’s look depends on how its studio applies the feature.
