It enables taps for payments, transit, access, device pairing, and NFC tags. Its short range can make an interaction more deliberate, but it does not make NFC automatically secure.
How NFC works
NFC uses radio communication centered on a 13.56 MHz base frequency. A phone, reader, card, or tag needs to be brought close to another compatible device to communicate. NFC Forum describes a typical range of up to 2 cm, while Android describes NFC as typically requiring 4 cm or less to initiate a connection. These are context-dependent figures, not a guaranteed operating distance; in practical use, think of NFC as working over a few centimeters.
Some NFC interactions can transfer power as well as data. That makes it possible for certain passive tags to work without their own battery, but it does not mean every NFC interaction supplies power or that all NFC devices work the same way. The NFC Forum’s technology overview and Android’s NFC documentation describe the technology and its typical use.
What NFC is used for
NFC is best known for bringing a device close to a reader or tag to trigger a specific action. Common uses include:

- Payments: A phone or wearable can present a payment credential to a contactless terminal.
- Transit: A compatible card or device can be used at supported fare readers.
- Access and identity: NFC can carry credentials used with compatible access systems, identity checks, or digital keys.
- Pairing: A tap can help start a connection or setup process between compatible devices.
- Tags and smart posters: A phone can read a tag to open a web address or perform another supported action.
NFC enables the close-range exchange; it does not by itself provide the payment service, grant access, verify an identity, or guarantee that two devices will pair. Those outcomes depend on the phone and its software, the service provider, the reader, and the tag or credential. The NFC Forum’s overview of NFC uses describes the range of applications.
The four NFC operating modes
NFC specifications cover several modes. The mode determines how the devices or tags interact; a phone or service does not necessarily support or expose every mode.

| Mode | What it does | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| Card emulation | A device presents a card-like interface to a reader. | Contactless payment or another supported credential. |
| Reader/writer | A device reads or writes compatible NFC tags or contactless cards. | Reading a passive sticker that contains a web address. |
| Peer-to-peer | Two NFC devices exchange information. | A close-range device-to-device interaction. |
| Wireless charging | Supported NFC implementations transfer limited power. | A specialized charging use, not a replacement for ordinary phone charging. |
The NFC Forum also defines NDEF, a format for structuring data carried in NFC messages and tags. Android commonly uses NDEF in its NFC APIs. See the NFC Forum specifications and Android NFC documentation for technical details.
How to use an NFC tag
A tag is a small NFC component that can store supported data. Some are passive, meaning they do not need their own battery. A compatible phone can read a tag, and some phones and apps can write to compatible tags. For a simple experiment, a writable sticker can hold a web address that opens when a compatible phone is brought near it.

- Check compatibility: Confirm that your phone supports NFC and that the tag supports the data format and operation you want. Phone capabilities and tag types vary.
- Enable or locate NFC: Check your phone’s settings or device documentation for NFC controls. The setting’s name and location vary by phone and operating system.
- Bring the phone close to the tag: Hold the phone near the tag; the antenna location varies, so you may need to reposition it. Follow the prompt shown by your phone or app.
- For writing, use a compatible app: Choose an app that supports your tag and the data you want to store, then follow its instructions. Do not assume a particular tag model has a specific capacity or works with every phone.
- Review the result: Check the destination or action before proceeding, especially if the tag was unexpected or came from an untrusted source.
Android documents reading and writing passive tags and stickers, but availability and behavior depend on the device, software, tag, and app. Its NFC guide explains the platform’s supported approaches.
NFC, RFID, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi
NFC is part of the broader family of radio-frequency identification (RFID) technologies, but RFID covers a wider range of systems and uses. NFC is a specific close-proximity technology with its own interoperability specifications.

Compared with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, NFC is designed around close, deliberate interactions such as tapping a phone on a reader or tag. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support different connection patterns and purposes. The sources cited here do not establish a fair numerical comparison of range, speed, or energy use, so those figures should not be inferred from the basic distinction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is NFC safe?
NFC’s short operating range can make eavesdropping more difficult, but proximity is not encryption and is not a complete security system. The security of a payment or credential depends on the device, application, credential, reader, and surrounding service—not just the radio link.

Relay attacks are one reason distance alone is not a guarantee: the NFC Forum’s technology roadmap recognizes relay attacks and notes that application cryptography alone cannot prevent them. This does not mean every NFC interaction is unsafe; it means safety controls must come from the complete system.
- Use trusted devices, apps, payment services, and access systems.
- Check unexpected prompts and verify a tag’s destination before opening it or taking action.
- Do not treat a short tap distance as proof that a transaction or credential exchange is protected.
The NFC Forum’s technology overview explains NFC’s operation; no universal security guarantee applies to every device or use.
What determines whether NFC will work?
NFC behavior depends on more than whether a phone has an NFC radio. Compatibility can depend on the phone model and operating system, whether NFC is enabled, the service or app, the reader, and the type and format of the tag. Some features may be unavailable even when a device supports NFC generally.
- Check your phone’s specifications and current device documentation for NFC support and settings.
- For payments, transit, access, or identity, check the requirements of the specific service and reader.
- For tags, check the tag’s type, supported format, and any app requirements before purchasing or relying on it.
Android’s NFC documentation describes Android-specific capabilities; the NFC Forum’s specifications cover standards and interoperability.
