Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist: Martyrs follows NYPD detective and single mother Julie Miller as she investigates murders staged to evoke the martyrdoms of Catholic saints. The killings continue after the suspected serial killer, Father Sunday, is executed, turning the case into a crime investigation with a possible supernatural threat. Universal currently lists the film for theaters on March 12, 2027.
What is The Exorcist: Martyrs about?
Julie Miller, played by Scarlett Johansson, is an NYPD homicide detective and mother to 12-year-old Max. She and fellow detective Gina Restrepo, played by Sasha Calle, investigate murders arranged to recall the brutal martyrdoms of Roman Catholic saints. Their first major suspect is Father Sunday, a serial killer played by John Leguizamo.
Julie witnesses Father Sunday’s execution, but it does not stop the killings. The investigation shifts from a pursuit of a human killer toward a threat that may be otherworldly, and the danger eventually reaches Julie’s family. The film’s basic engine is therefore a homicide case that develops into a supernatural possession story.
Who is in the cast, and what are their roles?
- Scarlett Johansson plays Julie Miller, an NYPD detective and single mother.
- Jacobi Jupe plays Max, Julie’s 12-year-old son.
- Sasha Calle plays Gina Restrepo, Julie’s fellow detective.
- John Leguizamo plays Father Sunday, the suspected serial killer.
- Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Father William, a former prison chaplain who presided over Father Sunday’s execution and later faces a crisis of faith.
- Laurence Fishburne plays a second priest familiar with ancient rituals.
- Diane Lane plays Mary, Julie’s mother.
Is it a sequel to The Exorcist: Believer or a remake?
Flanagan’s film is described as a new plotline with new characters in The Exorcist universe—not a remake or retelling of William Friedkin’s 1973 film, and not a sequel to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer. Flanagan said he wanted the story to stand on its own. He has left open the possibility of connective threads to classic elements, so “standalone” does not mean that every franchise connection is ruled out.

How does Flanagan describe the film’s tone and themes?
Flanagan has framed the film as a blend of serial-killer thriller and religious horror. He cited the appeal of Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs alongside The Exorcist, with the story asking how people confront evil—whether it is human or something that exerts direct control over people. That description is the director’s stated creative aim; the disclosed plot details establish the investigation and its supernatural turn, but do not reveal the full nature of the threat.
