Meta’s Hyperion is a planned, multi-gigawatt AI training campus in Richland Parish, northeast Louisiana. In a July 13, 2026 announcement, Meta said it was expanding the project to 5 GW of compute capacity; the buildout is not described as complete.

What is Meta’s Hyperion data center?

Hyperion is Meta’s large-scale AI infrastructure project: a data-center campus designed to provide computing capacity for training artificial intelligence models. It is planned for Richland Parish in northeast Louisiana and is described by Meta as its largest multi-gigawatt AI training cluster.

Meta’s latest expansion announcement, dated July 13, 2026, says the campus is expanding to 5 GW of compute capacity. Louisiana Economic Development describes the expanded campus as nearly 10 million square feet with 5 GW of IT capacity. Those are the respective sources’ descriptions; the terms should not be treated as identical technical measures.

Where is Hyperion, and how large is the campus?

The project is in Richland Parish, Louisiana. Its announced scale is unusually large: Meta says 5 GW of compute capacity, while Louisiana Economic Development lists 5 GW of IT capacity and nearly 10 million square feet for the expanded campus. The figures describe a planned buildout, not a completed facility.

How much is Meta investing in Hyperion?

The two prominent investment figures refer to different scopes and announcements. Meta’s July 2026 post says the expansion represents more than $50 billion in investment in the Richland Parish region. In October 2025, Meta separately put the joint venture’s total development costs at approximately $27 billion for buildings and long-lived power, cooling, and connectivity infrastructure. The cited announcements do not reconcile those amounts, so they should not be added together or read as competing estimates of the same cost.

Figure What it describes Source and date
More than $50 billion Investment in the Richland Parish region associated with the expansion Meta, July 13, 2026
Approximately $27 billion Joint-venture development costs for buildings and long-lived power, cooling, and connectivity infrastructure Meta, October 21, 2025

Who owns and operates the campus?

Under the joint-venture structure announced in October 2025, funds managed by Blue Owl Capital own 80% and Meta retains 20%. Meta said both parties committed to fund their pro rata share of the approximately $27 billion development costs. Meta is to provide construction and property-management services and lease the completed campus.

What jobs and local benefits are announced?

Meta’s July 2026 announcement projects more than 7,500 jobs at peak construction and 1,000 operational roles once the campus is complete. These are company projections, not final employment totals. The figures have changed across project stages: Meta’s October 2025 announcement cited more than 500 operational jobs, while Louisiana Economic Development’s page includes older highlights of 800 or more. They should be understood as dated projections rather than combined into one headcount.

Meta also reports that since groundbreaking it has contracted more than $1.6 billion with Louisiana businesses and invested more than $1 billion in local infrastructure. It announced $5 million for Louisiana Delta Community College scholarships and workforce training. These are company-reported activity and commitments; the announcements do not independently establish final economic outcomes.

Rachel Peterson, Meta’s vice president of data centers, characterized the local impact this way: “With more than $1.6 billion already contracted with local companies and thousands of jobs being supported, we’re delivering real economic impact alongside the AI infrastructure that will power the future.” This is the company’s characterization of its reported activity.

How will Meta power Hyperion?

Power is a central part of the project. Meta says its agreement with Entergy includes seven natural-gas-fueled plants, three grid-scale batteries, nuclear uprates, and other purchased power. The announcements describe planned arrangements; they do not independently verify delivered capacity or environmental results.

What is still uncertain?

  • Final cost: The cited announcements do not reconcile regional investment with joint-venture development costs.
  • Completion and operating schedule: The project is described as a buildout; the cited material does not establish a completed campus or final construction schedule.
  • Final employment: Operational job counts are projections that have varied between announcement stages.
  • Power and community outcomes: The announced utility arrangements, savings, clean-energy commitments, and local benefits are not independently verified realized results in the cited material.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said, “This commitment from Meta puts Louisiana at the center of America’s future in artificial intelligence, positioning our nation to compete and lead globally”.
