The Linux Foundation welcomed it as a project on March 26, 2019. LVFS delivers update files; fwupd is the local software that applies supported updates to devices.
What LVFS does—and how fwupd fits in
Hardware vendors upload redistributable firmware and metadata to LVFS. Firmware is packaged in an industry-standard .cab archive with Linux-specific metadata. Client software such as fwupdmgr, GNOME Software, and KDE Discover can show available updates to Linux users. The local fwupd daemon works with session software to perform an update on the device. LVFS and fwupd are open source projects, as described on the official project site.
In short, LVFS is the distribution service; fwupd is the update mechanism on the computer. Neither vendor participation nor the existence of an LVFS release means every device, operating-system configuration, or firmware version is supported. Check current project or vendor information for the exact model and update you need.
How the project began
In the Linux Foundation’s March 26, 2019 announcement, Richard Hughes traced the work to his hobby project for an open hardware colorimeter called ColorHug. He first built a command-line updater, then a graphical updater; early on, the software retrieved a version list from an XML file hosted on his homepage.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Dell became an early supporter. Hughes credited Dell’s Mario Limonciello with work on the LVFS website and fwupd. The project’s plugins allow it to work with multiple update protocols, and its development involved contributors from several companies rather than a single vendor.
What the announcement reported, and what later milestones add
The Linux Foundation’s 2019 announcement said LVFS then supported firmware updates for 72 devices from about 30 vendors and had supplied more than 5 million firmware updates to Linux clients. These are figures reported at the time of that announcement, not current totals.

On December 18, 2023, the Linux Foundation announced that LVFS had surpassed 100 million firmware updates. It also said updates can be freely redistributed without tracking and that large organizations can mirror LVFS for offline use. That is a dated organizational milestone, not a live count.
On August 6, 2026, the Linux Foundation announced that Dell Technologies, HP Inc., Lenovo, and NVIDIA had joined LVFS as Premier Members. The announcement described LVFS integration with fwupd, fwupdmgr, and GNOME Software, and positioned the service as infrastructure for Linux users and enterprise fleets. Membership signals industry support for the service; it does not establish support for every model from those companies.

Why the infrastructure matters
Firmware updates can address device-specific issues and improvements, but Linux users need a dependable way to discover and install releases made available by hardware vendors. LVFS provides a shared distribution route, while fwupd and compatible client applications make supported updates available through familiar software. That separation—vendor-provided releases delivered through a common service and applied locally—helps explain why the Linux Foundation described LVFS as infrastructure rather than as a standalone consumer product.
Hughes stated his long-term goal in the 2019 announcement: “My long-term goal is for the LVFS to be seen like a boring, critical part of infrastructure in Linux, much like you’d consider a NTP server for accurate time, or a PGP keyserver for trust.”

How to check whether your device is supported
Do not infer compatibility from a computer brand, a vendor’s Premier Member status, or the fact that your Linux system has fwupd installed. Support is specific to devices and firmware releases. Check the current LVFS or vendor information for your exact model and update, then follow the instructions supplied for that release.
