Lake-effect snow forms when cold air moves over warmer, open lake water, gathers heat and moisture, then drops snow downwind. It most often affects snowbelts south and east of the Great Lakes under prevailing west or northwest winds, but a shift in wind direction can move the snow to another shore. Its narrow bands can make snowfall dramatically different from one community to the next.

Why does lake-effect snow happen?

Lake-effect snow begins when cold air passes over a lake that is warmer than the air. Water evaporates into the moving air, and heat from the lake warms it. The now-moister air rises, cools as it moves away from the water, and forms clouds and precipitation. If the air remains cold enough, that precipitation falls as snow.

The lake must be open enough to supply heat and moisture. As ice covers more of the surface, that supply is reduced, so the process generally weakens later in winter. NOAA says lake-effect snow often slows around February as lakes freeze; this is a broad seasonal tendency, not a fixed cutoff. NOAA NESDIS explains the process and seasonality.

Where does lake-effect snow occur?

Great Lakes snowbelts

In the United States, lake-effect snow is best known around the Great Lakes. Under common west and northwest winds, the southern and eastern shores are frequent impact areas. NOAA educational material identifies snowbelts in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. These are broad regions, not places that receive equal snowfall: local terrain, lake conditions, and the exact wind determine which communities are affected. A NOAA-hosted study describes the prevailing-flow pattern around the Great Lakes. The 2023 study of Great Lakes lake-effect precipitation.

Great Salt Lake and other shores

NOAA also lists areas near Utah’s Great Salt Lake as a snowbelt. Lake-effect snow is not limited to the Great Lakes; the same basic process can occur wherever cold air crosses relatively warm, open water and then travels over land.

Wind direction can shift the affected shoreline. A 2003–2018 study of western Lake Superior reported an average of 14.6 easterly lake-collective precipitation events per year in that specific region. The count includes lake-effect and lake-enhanced precipitation and is not a total for the Great Lakes. Sandstrom, Cordeira, Hoffman, and Metz, 2023.

Why does one side of a lake get more snow?

Wind carries the lake-warmed, moisture-rich air toward the downwind shore. The direction of the wind therefore helps determine where snow falls; a different wind can shift the favored area to another shore. The longer the air travels across open water, the more opportunity it has to gain moisture. NOAA gives an approximate travel distance of about 25 miles before the moisture falls, sometimes as far as 100 miles. Those are educational estimates, not boundaries that apply to every event. NOAA NESDIS.

Lake-effect snow is often organized into narrow bands rather than spread evenly across a region. NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory says bands are usually less than 3 miles wide, which helps explain why one town can receive heavy snow while a nearby town gets much less. Their small footprint also makes exact placement difficult to capture in forecast models. NOAA GLERL’s explanation of lake-effect snow.

How is lake-effect snow different from storm-system snow?

Feature Lake-effect snow Low-pressure-system snow
Moisture and energy source Heat and moisture supplied by relatively warm lake water beneath cold air Moisture and lift associated with a broader low-pressure weather system
Geographic footprint Often concentrated in narrow downwind bands Generally affects a broader area
Local variation Can be intense in one band and much lighter nearby Snowfall is not organized by a narrow lake-fed band in the same way
Key local influences Wind direction, distance over open water, and lake ice The storm’s broader track and structure

NOAA GLERL describes lake-effect snow as more localized and sometimes more rapid and intense than snow from a low-pressure storm. The NOAA GLERL article.

How intense can it get, and what is a snow squall?

A narrow band can produce hazardous conditions quickly. NOAA’s example of Buffalo’s October 2006 lake-effect event reports up to 27 inches of snow; trees and power lines were damaged, roads were blocked, and power outages occurred. This is an example of an exceptional event, not a typical snowfall amount. NOAA NESDIS.

A lake-effect snow squall is a local, intense, narrow band that can extend far inland and last for many hours. It may bring gusty surface winds or lightning. The National Weather Service glossary says accumulations can reach 6 inches or more in 12 hours; warning criteria vary by area. For decisions during an active event, check alerts from your local National Weather Service office. NWS JetStream weather glossary.

How do forecasters identify lake-effect potential?

Forecasters consider the contrast between lake-surface temperature and the temperature of the air above it, along with wind direction and the amount of open water. NOAA CoastWatch describes a Michigan forecasting heuristic: a temperature difference (Delta T) of 13°C or greater between the lake surface and air at 5,000 feet may indicate lake-effect snow potential. It is a rule of thumb from that Michigan context, not a universal threshold or a guarantee that snow will occur. NOAA CoastWatch lake-ice information.

Forecasting the precise location and intensity remains challenging because bands are narrow, and winter lake measurements and satellite imagery can be difficult to obtain. For a specific storm, use current local forecasts and NWS alerts rather than relying on a general pattern.

When is lake-effect snow most common?

It is most common in late fall and winter, when cold air can pass over comparatively warmer lake water. As the lakes freeze, less open water remains to feed the process, and lake-effect snow often slows around February. The timing varies with lake ice and weather; October snow in Buffalo, for example, shows that significant events can occur earlier in the season.
