What is iTunes for Windows?
iTunes for Windows is software for organizing and using media on a Windows PC. Apple’s iTunes guide describes features such as adding music and other media, organizing a library, making playlists, playing content, downloading podcasts, buying items from the iTunes Store, importing songs from CDs, and syncing content with devices. It is an application, not an Apple Music subscription.
Apple’s current Windows guidance gives iTunes a narrower day-to-day role: managing podcasts and audiobooks. Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Devices have dedicated roles for music, video, and iPhone or iPad management, respectively. Which Apple app should you use on Windows?

These apps are not simply interchangeable media players: Apple assigns them different tasks. Store and service features may vary by country or region, so availability of a particular purchase or feature depends on where you are.

Do you still need iTunes on your PC?
If your main task is podcasts or audiobooks, Apple’s current Windows guidance points to iTunes. For music, video, or manual iPhone and iPad management, use the dedicated app for that task. Apple also says that people who do not install Apple Music or Apple TV can continue using iTunes for all their media. The transition is therefore not an across-the-board cutoff, and Apple’s guidance does not say that every existing library must be migrated.
What else can iTunes do?
Apple’s PC user guide documents a broader set of iTunes features, including organizing a media library, creating playlists, playing content, buying or downloading Store items, downloading podcasts, importing songs from CDs, and syncing media with devices. These guide features describe what iTunes covers; for choosing an app now, follow Apple’s current task-based Windows guidance.

To import music from a disc on a PC without an optical drive, you would need an external USB CD/DVD drive. That accessory is only relevant to CD importing, not to using iTunes generally.
Where to download iTunes and check compatibility
Apple’s current Windows support page directs users to the Microsoft Store for iTunes. It directs users to the same store for Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Devices, and says updates for those apps can be checked there. See Apple’s download and app guidance.

Be careful when reading older system requirements. Apple’s specification page is specifically for iTunes 12 for Windows and lists Windows 7 or later for that version. It is not evidence that the current iTunes download supports every older Windows PC or has the same requirements. Check the current Microsoft Store listing and Apple’s support information for your PC.
