Ilya Sutskever, the OpenAI co-founder who took part in the board effort that briefly removed Sam Altman in November 2023, left OpenAI and co-founded a new company: Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI). SSI says its sole aim is to build a safe superintelligence; its public statements and the reported NVIDIA partnership do not establish that it has released a consumer AI product.

What happened between Ilya Sutskever and Sam Altman?

In November 2023, OpenAI’s board briefly removed Sam Altman as CEO. The Associated Press and TIME reported in 2024 that Sutskever took part in the board effort. He later supported Altman’s return. Sutskever was not the person ousted in that episode: Altman was removed, while Sutskever was an OpenAI leader involved in the decision.

Sutskever left OpenAI in 2024. On June 19 of that year, he and two co-founders announced SSI. The timeline separates the board crisis from the company’s founding:

Date Development
November 2023 Sutskever participated in the board effort that temporarily removed Altman, according to AP and TIME reporting published in 2024.
June 19, 2024 SSI published its founding statement naming Sutskever, Daniel Gross, and Daniel Levy as founders.
July 27, 2026 NVIDIA announced a long-term strategic partnership with SSI.

What is Safe Superintelligence Inc.?

SSI describes itself as a lab with one goal and one product: “a safe superintelligence.” That is the founders’ stated ambition, not an announcement that SSI has already built superintelligence or released a model.

  • Server-grade thermal architecture: Utilizing a dedicated CPU/GPU airflow design, equipped with a 6-pipe dual-fan cooler, it maintains stable performance even under sustained loads, delivering up to 140W Turbo power while maintaining a 100W TDP, and operating with noise levels as low as 36 dB. An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.

The company says it intends to develop capabilities and safety together, rather than treating safety as a later addition. Its founding statement says its focus avoids distraction from management overhead or product cycles, and that its business model is meant to insulate safety, security, and progress from short-term commercial pressure. Those are SSI’s claims about its approach and incentives; they should not be mistaken for independently demonstrated outcomes.

SSI describes itself as an American company with offices in Palo Alto, California, and Tel Aviv, Israel. It says the locations reflect its roots and access to technical talent.

Who founded SSI?

  • Ilya Sutskever: OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist; he is the central technical figure in SSI’s founding and was involved in the 2023 board crisis.
  • Daniel Gross: SSI co-founder, previously identified in reporting as an Apple AI lead, entrepreneur, and investor.
  • Daniel Levy: SSI co-founder and former OpenAI researcher whose work included large-model training and optimization.

Is SSI a rival to OpenAI, and does it have a product?

SSI can be viewed as an alternative AI research effort because it is pursuing a major AI capability goal associated with the field. But the available statements do not support a claim that SSI has launched a competing consumer chatbot, public model, or commercial AI service. Its stated focus is building a safe superintelligence, not marketing a product cycle.

NVIDIA’s July 27, 2026 announcement of a long-term strategic partnership shows that SSI has an infrastructure relationship with a major AI-computing company. It does not, by itself, demonstrate that SSI has made a product available to consumers or that it has achieved its stated goal. The cited company and news announcements do not give a confirmed product launch date, employee count, valuation, or revenue figure.
