Hybrid cloud storage is an integrated arrangement of private or on-premises storage and public cloud storage. It lets an organization decide where data resides and connect those locations so applications and people can access or move data across them as needed. Simply having a local drive and a separate cloud account is not enough: integration is what makes the arrangement hybrid.

What hybrid cloud storage means

The formal cloud definition comes from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST): a hybrid cloud combines two or more distinct cloud infrastructures—private, community, or public—that remain separate entities but are linked by technology that enables data and application portability. NIST gives cloud bursting between clouds as one example of that portability. Read the NIST hybrid cloud definition.

Applied specifically to storage, the term describes how data is placed across and accessed between private or local infrastructure and public cloud storage. The environments may be integrated through shared access, data movement, orchestration, or management. The particular design varies; the definition does not require that every file be copied or synchronized automatically. Google Cloud describes this storage-oriented use as a mix of private and public storage models in which organizations choose where data goes: Google Cloud’s hybrid cloud overview.

How data is divided between local and cloud storage

An organization sets placement rules based on its own workloads and constraints; there is no standard percentage or required split. For instance, it might keep sensitive or compliance-constrained data in a private environment and put other data in public cloud storage. That is one possible policy, not a guarantee of compliance or a universal best practice.

UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Other reasons to retain data locally can include fast access, local processing, large data volumes, limited bandwidth, transfer costs, timing, or residency requirements. Public cloud storage can provide a place for archives or capacity beyond what is kept on premises. These are design choices, not automatic properties of hybrid storage. AWS describes these deployment considerations in its hybrid cloud overview.

What connects the storage environments

Integration is the key distinction from two unrelated storage destinations. Depending on the design, a layer of software or services can coordinate placement and movement, present cloud storage to local applications, or provide shared management. For example, AWS documents Storage Gateway services that expose cloud storage to on-premises applications using standard protocols such as SMB, NFS, and iSCSI. See AWS guidance on hybrid architectures.

A gateway is one implementation pattern, not a required component of every hybrid deployment. Protocol support, access behavior, data movement, and management features depend on the chosen architecture and services. Confirm that the connection supports the applications and access methods you need.

Why organizations use hybrid cloud storage

  • Keep some work close to its data: Local storage and processing can suit applications that need low latency or must continue operating near on-premises systems.
  • Work around capacity or connectivity limits: Data size, bandwidth, transfer timing, or cost may make it practical to retain some data locally while using cloud storage for other needs.
  • Meet placement constraints: Residency, regulatory, or organizational requirements may affect where particular data can be stored. The architecture itself does not establish compliance.
  • Extend existing infrastructure: Organizations can continue using existing on-premises investments while integrating public cloud capabilities.
  • Support archiving or gradual migration: Cloud storage may serve as an archive destination or a stage in moving workloads over time.

These are common use cases, not proof that hybrid architecture will always lower cost, improve performance, or reduce risk. The outcome depends on the workload, connectivity, services, and operating model.

Trade-offs and design checks

Using two connected environments can add operational, integration, security, and access-control complexity. Before choosing a design, assess the following:

  • Residency and compliance: Identify applicable data-location obligations and verify that each destination and movement path meets them.
  • Latency and processing: Determine which workloads need local access or processing, and measure requirements in the relevant environment rather than assuming cloud or local storage will be faster.
  • Connectivity and protocols: Check availability, bandwidth, supported access protocols, and what happens when the connection is interrupted.
  • Integration and administration: Establish how placement, movement, monitoring, and troubleshooting will be managed across environments.
  • Security and identity: Plan authentication, authorization, encryption, monitoring, and consistent access controls for both locations.
  • Resilience and recovery: Define backup, recovery, and continuity needs for each data set; hybrid architecture alone does not ensure redundancy.
  • Total cost: Consider local infrastructure, cloud capacity, integration and operations, and data-transfer charges together.

Microsoft’s hybrid cloud overview also describes the management and security considerations involved. No single design or universal performance or savings figure applies across organizations.

Hybrid cloud versus multicloud

Hybrid cloud describes integration between private or on-premises infrastructure and public cloud infrastructure. Multicloud describes using cloud services from more than one provider and does not, by itself, require on-premises infrastructure. An organization can use both approaches—for example, connecting its data center to services from multiple cloud providers. Provider terminology can vary, so clarify which environments are included when describing an architecture. AWS discusses deployment strategies in its cloud deployment strategies guidance.

When the term applies

Call a storage setup hybrid when distinct private or local and public cloud environments are meaningfully connected for data access, movement, or management. If local storage and a cloud account operate independently, without integration between them, the arrangement is not hybrid in this sense. The exact mechanisms and data-placement policy are architecture-specific; NIST’s formal definition is in SP 800-145, published September 28, 2011.
