The response normally comes from an intercepting proxy or captive-portal system, not from the website you tried to open.
Follow the network-provided login link, complete the requirement, and retry the original request. A 511 response is a temporary statement about your network access; it is not the website’s own account-login error and must not be stored by caches.
What does “511 Network Authentication Required” mean?
When a server returns a 511 status, the network path has intercepted your request because your device has not yet satisfied that network’s access policy. The policy may require:
- Signing in to a hotel, airport, café, school, workplace or other Wi-Fi portal.
- Accepting terms of service or a usage policy.
- Entering a voucher, room number or payment code.
- Completing a device-registration or security step.
The requested origin server may be operating normally. The intercepting proxy is saying that it will not pass your traffic to that origin until the network requirement is complete.

HTTP 511 is defined for this intercepting-network situation. An origin website should not generate it merely because that site has a login page. A normal website authentication problem generally uses a different response and is handled by the site’s own account system.
Why you are seeing a 511 error
Captive Wi-Fi portal
The most common case is a captive portal. Your device joins Wi-Fi and receives an address, but the network keeps ordinary web traffic behind a gateway. Requests are redirected to a login or acceptance page until you finish the process.
Enterprise or managed networks
Corporate, campus and public-sector networks can require a browser sign-in, device enrollment or other authorization before allowing external traffic. Their proxy may return 511 when an unauthenticated client requests an outside site.
Subscription, voucher or payment access
Some venues allow network association but require a voucher, payment or time-based renewal. Until that step is complete, the gateway can answer with 511.

Stale network state
A portal session can expire, or the network can lose track of your device after sleep, roaming or a change of network address. Reconnecting may cause the portal to issue a fresh requirement.
How to fix HTTP 511
- Open the network’s login link. Read the 511 response or the browser’s captive-portal page for the supplied link. RFC 6585’s design expects the response to point to a separate resource where you complete authentication.
- Complete every required step. Sign in, accept the terms, enter a voucher, register the device or pay the stated fee, as applicable.
- Return to the original page and retry. The original request may have failed before authentication was recorded, so reload it rather than assuming the first failure was permanent.
- Check that you are using the intended network. Turn off a VPN or manually configured proxy temporarily if the portal cannot open, then reconnect after access is granted if your organization permits it.
- Forget and rejoin Wi-Fi if the session is stuck. Remove the network from your device, join it again and repeat the portal process.
- Ask the network operator for help. If the login link is missing, credentials fail, or the portal loops, the venue or network administrator must repair the access policy.
Do not enter your credentials into a page that merely appears at the requested website’s URL. A correctly designed 511 response directs you to a separate network login resource so that the portal’s authentication is not confused with the origin site’s identity.

What a correct 511 response should contain
RFC 6585 specifies that the response representation should include a link to the resource where the user can submit credentials or satisfy the network requirement. The 511 response itself should not carry the authentication challenge or embed the login interface as though it belonged to the requested origin. That separation helps prevent a captive portal from making its login appear to be part of the website you contacted.
A client can therefore treat 511 as an instruction to discover and visit the network’s access resource, complete the process, and retry. It should not silently treat the response body as the requested page.
511 compared with other HTTP errors

The exact status alone cannot prove which device generated a response. Headers, the response body, network topology and your location help identify the source. The defining 511 use, however, is a network access gate rather than an origin site’s account challenge.
Developer guidance for handling 511
Do not cache it
RFC 6585 requires that a 511 response not be stored by a cache. A cached portal response could be replayed to other requests after authentication succeeds, or could expose one network’s login page in the wrong context. Configure HTTP clients, reverse proxies and intermediaries to treat 511 as non-cacheable.
Do not retry blindly
Repeatedly sending the same request does not authenticate the client. A program should surface the network-access requirement, provide the supplied login URI when safe to do so, and wait for the user or a managed-network workflow to complete it. Automatic retries can create loops and unnecessary traffic.
Keep origin and network identities separate
Do not present the portal’s credentials form as if it were the origin application’s login. Preserve the distinction in logs, user interfaces and security decisions. A 511 body or link is controlled by the network path, not necessarily by the site named in the original URL.

Expect non-browser clients to need an out-of-band step
Command-line tools, background jobs and APIs may receive 511 because they cannot interact with a portal. The operator may need to authenticate with a browser on the same network, register the device, or move the workload to an authorized connection. Do not assume that adding the origin site’s username and password will resolve a 511.
Log enough context to diagnose the path
- The original URL and whether the request used HTTP or HTTPS.
- Status, response headers and a bounded sample of the response body.
- Network name, proxy settings and whether a VPN was active.
- Timestamp and whether other websites showed the same behavior.
Redact cookies, authorization headers and portal credentials from logs.
Captive-portal standards beyond 511
HTTP 511 was defined in 2012 for the familiar captive-portal arrangement in which a network intercepts traffic and directs an unauthenticated client to a login server. The specification notes that the status is intended to limit damage to software expecting a response from the server it contacted; it does not endorse captive portals.
More recent IETF work describes ways for clients to discover a portal without relying on forged DNS or HTTP responses:
- RFC 8910 defines DHCPv4, DHCPv6 and IPv6 Router Advertisement options that can tell a client it may be behind a captive portal and provide the Captive Portal API URI. The option code is 114; it replaced the earlier code point 160 from RFC 7710.
- RFC 8952 describes an architecture using network provisioning, an optional captive-portal signal and an HTTPS API. It explains why older DNS- or HTTP-altering techniques can break applications and create security risks.
- RFC 8908 specifies the Captive Portal API and requires its endpoint to use HTTPS.
These discovery and API mechanisms complement the meaning of 511. A network can provide explicit portal information to a capable client, while 511 remains the status a client may encounter when an intercepting gateway blocks the requested resource.
Troubleshooting a 511 that will not clear
The portal page never appears
Disconnect and reconnect to Wi-Fi, then open a plain HTTP page that does not require your intended service. Temporarily disable a VPN or custom proxy, because encrypted or tunneled traffic can prevent the portal from presenting its login flow. If the network supplies a portal URI through device settings, use that URI rather than guessing a site address.

The portal keeps redirecting after sign-in
Sign out of other portal tabs, clear only the affected network’s session data if appropriate, forget and rejoin the Wi-Fi network, and retry. A device-registration limit, expired voucher or clock error can also leave the gateway believing that access is incomplete; the operator must correct those conditions.
Only one application receives 511
The application may use a proxy, VPN, certificate policy or DNS configuration different from your browser. Compare its network settings with the browser’s, and test from the same interface. If the browser is authorized but the application still receives 511, ask the network administrator whether that client or device identity must be registered separately.

A gateway cannot safely replace an HTTPS site with an unrelated login page without causing a certificate mismatch. Use the network’s official discovery or login mechanism, or contact the operator; do not bypass certificate warnings to submit credentials.
You see 511 on a server-to-server job
Move the job to an authorized network, configure the approved enterprise proxy, or complete device registration through the organization’s documented process. Do not bake a human portal password into an automated script.

Usually no. It is intended to be generated by an intercepting network proxy, while the origin website may be functioning normally.
Can I fix a 511 by adding website credentials to my request?
Not normally. Complete the network’s separate portal or registration step; the origin site’s username and password do not authenticate you to the network.
Should a proxy or CDN cache a 511 response?
No. RFC 6585 says a 511 response must not be stored by a cache.
What is the difference between 511 and 407?
