OD is an in-development horror game project from Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios. Its announced concept centers on testing a player’s fear threshold and blurring the line between games and film. Kojima has shared production updates, but the gameplay, story, release timing, and full platform list have not been established in the available announcements.
What is OD?
Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios announced OD at The Game Awards in December 2023. The studio described it as a horror project built around fear, while suggesting it may push beyond conventional game-and-film boundaries.

OD is being developed by Kojima Productions with Xbox Game Studios. The 2023 announcement identified filmmaker Jordan Peele as one of several storytellers involved; it did not present him as the project’s sole writer or director.

Kojima Productions announced Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier in lead roles. Xbox’s September 2026 update included performance-capture footage of Lillis and Schafer. The available announcements do not clarify the current role status of every performer. Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 update
What is known about the gameplay and technology?
Fear is the stated creative premise
At the 2023 announcement, Kojima said the team was working with Xbox Game Studios and its cloud gaming technology “to take on the challenge of creating a very unique, immersive, and totally new style of game – or rather, a new form of media.” Xbox had announced its partnership with Kojima Productions in June 2022, describing a game that would leverage Xbox cloud technology. The OD: Knock teaser offers only a glimpse
Kojima Productions presented a teaser titled OD: Knock at its tenth-anniversary event in 2025. TechRadar reported that the teaser was developed in Unreal Engine 5 and quoted Kojima discussing a new system and repeated testing. Those details are reporting about the teaser and Kojima’s comments, not a complete official technical specification or a full explanation of the game’s design. TechRadar’s OD: Knock report
What is the development status?
In September 2026, Kojima said performance capture and ADR recording—additional dialogue recording—had resumed after pausing during the SAG strike, and that production was proceeding on schedule. In an October 2026 interview report, Kojima said filming had resumed in June and would continue through the end of the year, while ADR work would carry into 2027. He also said, “this doesn’t mean we haven’t made the game. I want to keep quiet and release it.” These are production updates and plans, not a launch schedule. The available official announcements and reporting do not establish:
- The specific gameplay loop or how players will interact with the horror.
- The story, setting, or player perspective beyond what appears in the OD: Knock teaser.
- Final technical requirements or exactly how Xbox cloud technology will be used.
- A release date or release window.
- A complete platform list.
