HarmonyOS is Huawei’s operating system and software platform for connected devices. Huawei describes it as a distributed system designed to let supported devices coordinate and share capabilities, with development tools for building apps across device types. What that means in practice depends on the exact device, software release, region and apps you need.
How does HarmonyOS connect devices?
Huawei’s design concept is a “super device”: compatible products can work collaboratively and share resources. Huawei’s HarmonyOS overview presents this as a way to support a connected experience across devices, rather than treating HarmonyOS only as a phone interface. The description is Huawei’s platform proposition, not independent confirmation that every device or feature works together seamlessly.
Huawei’s consumer materials for HarmonyOS 3 describe a feature called Super Device, alongside privacy and security features. Those details are specific to the HarmonyOS 3 material; they do not establish that the same interface or features are identical in HarmonyOS NEXT or later releases. Cross-device capabilities can depend on the particular supported hardware and software combination.
Which devices use HarmonyOS?
Huawei positions HarmonyOS for a range of connected-device scenarios. Its materials include guidance for wearable app development, and the company’s October 2024 HarmonyOS NEXT public-beta notice named the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 11-inch 2024 among devices entering beta. That is a dated example, not a current worldwide compatibility list or confirmation of availability in every country.

Before buying, updating or troubleshooting a device, check its exact model number, region and installed software release against Huawei’s current update information. A device’s product family or appearance alone may not establish that it supports a particular HarmonyOS generation or cross-device feature.
What is HarmonyOS NEXT?
HarmonyOS NEXT is a newer generation in Huawei’s HarmonyOS platform. Huawei announced its beta at the June 2024 developer conference; in October 2024, it announced public-beta expansion to additional models, including the MatePad Pro 11-inch 2024. These announcements explain the rollout chronology at that time, not the current eligibility of a model in a particular market.

In its October 2024 announcement, Huawei reported that HarmonyOS NEXT improved whole-device fluency by 30%, added about 56 minutes of battery life and saved an average of 1.5 GB of running memory. Huawei tied these figures to its own test setup. They are company-reported results, not independent comparative measurements or a guarantee of the same gains on every device.
Are HarmonyOS apps the same as Android apps?
Do not assume that an app available on Android is also available for HarmonyOS. Huawei’s HarmonyOS developer portal documents a platform-specific development and distribution stack, including ArkTS, ArkUI, ArkCompiler and AppGallery Connect. The existence of these tools does not establish app-by-app availability or parity with another operating system.

If particular apps are essential, verify their availability for your exact device and region before switching or purchasing. The same check applies to apps used across multiple devices: a platform’s support for multi-device development does not guarantee that a specific app offers every feature on every form factor.
