Google’s Knowledge Graph is a system that organizes facts about real-world entities—such as people, places, and things—and the relationships between them. It helps Google Search interpret what a query refers to and answer factual questions. A Knowledge Panel is one possible Search display informed by the graph; it is not the graph itself.
How Google’s Knowledge Graph works
A search query is made of words, but those words can refer to different things. Google describes its approach as understanding “things, not strings”: it uses entities and their relationships to interpret meaning and context. For example, “How tall is the Eiffel Tower?” asks about an attribute of a particular place, while “Where were the 2016 Summer Olympics held?” asks about a relationship between an event and a location.
Google describes the Knowledge Graph as a database of facts about people, places, and things. Information can come from material shared across the web, open-source and licensed databases, and factual information provided by content owners. Google’s public explanations do not describe every source or the full mechanics of how facts are selected and connected.
Knowledge Graph vs. Knowledge Panel
The Knowledge Graph is the information system; a Knowledge Panel is a Search feature that may present selected information about a topic. Panels are intended to help people quickly understand a subject and explore further. Depending on the topic, a panel may include a title, summary, description, image, key facts, and links to official sites or social profiles. Its contents vary, and not every topic has the same presentation.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the public Knowledge Graph API provides
The Knowledge Graph Search API is a developer interface for searching for entities, not a public window into Google’s entire internal graph. Its documented endpoint is kgsearch.googleapis.com/v1/entities:search; results can include structured fields such as an entity’s name, description, image, URL, and relevance score. Google lists uses such as entity completion, finding notable entities that match constraints, and annotating or organizing content.
Google’s developer overview describes the older Search API as read-only and points new projects toward Cloud Enterprise Knowledge Graph. Because API guidance and availability can change, developers should check the current Knowledge Graph developer documentation before starting or migrating an integration.

Google Cloud Enterprise Knowledge Graph is a separate product
Google Cloud’s Enterprise Knowledge Graph has its own documentation and should not be confused with the public Knowledge Graph Search API or with Google Search’s internal Knowledge Graph. The Cloud documentation says its search method returns individual matching entities rather than interconnected graph data. It points readers who need graph data dumps toward Wikidata; it does not establish that either Google API exposes Google Search’s complete internal graph. See the Google Cloud Enterprise Knowledge Graph documentation for the product’s scope.
How large is Google’s Knowledge Graph?
Google has published two historical scale figures, but neither should be treated as a current total:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the Knowledge Graph does—and does not—tell you
- It helps Search interpret entities, their attributes, and their relationships rather than relying only on matching words.
- It can inform factual answers and Knowledge Panels, but a panel is a selected presentation, not a complete view of the underlying information.
- Google’s public explanations identify several kinds of information sources; they do not say that Wikipedia or any other single source supplies the whole graph.
- The public Search API returns matching entity records. It does not provide documented access to Google’s complete internal graph structure.
Google’s Knowledge Panel help page explains how panels can help people explore information and notes that what appears varies by topic. Its Search help page on the Knowledge Graph describes factual questions and the kinds of information the graph can help Search answer.
