Google Related search for content is an AdSense for Search feature that displays contextually relevant search terms on a publisher’s content pages. When a visitor clicks a term, it opens a search-results page on that publisher’s site, where relevant results and search ads may appear. Publishers need AdSense for Search contracting, activation by an account manager, and Google-generated implementation code to use it.
What Related search for content does
Google introduced Related search for content in 2022. Google describes it as a contextual navigation unit: it uses a page’s content to generate search terms related to what the visitor is reading. Google says this approach uses page content rather than personal user data.
A clicked term sends the visitor to a search-results page on the publisher’s website, rather than directly to another article. That page can present relevant results and search ads. Google’s launch announcement says the feature may help increase engagement, traffic, pageviews, ad impressions, and incremental revenue, but it provides no numerical lift or independent study supporting a specific outcome.
How it differs from site search and related-content links
| Feature | Where a click goes | How suggestions are chosen | Monetization | Setup and obligations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Related search for content | The publisher’s search-results page | Google generates terms from the page’s content | Search ads may appear on the results page | Requires AdSense for Search contracting and account-manager activation, generated code, and compliance with relevance and traffic-source requirements |
| Ordinary site search | A search-results page on the publisher’s site | The visitor enters a query | Depends on the publisher’s search implementation | Uses the site’s search setup; Related search-specific contracting and traffic declarations are not established for ordinary site search |
| Related-content widget | Another article or content item | May be editorially curated or selected by a recommendation system | May use display ads, or none | Depends on the widget; it does not provide the same search-results destination as Related search for content |
What publishers need to activate it
- Complete AdSense for Search contracting. Google says publishers must complete the contracting steps and contact their account manager to activate Related search for content. It is not simply a feature a publisher can switch on by adding a snippet to any site.
- Create and configure the search experience. In AdSense, create a search style, choose where the unit will appear, and use the code generator to create the implementation. Google’s developer reference requires a results-page URL and style ID; for content pages, set
relatedSearchTargetingtocontent. - Deploy Google’s generated code. Follow the generated implementation for the chosen placement and results page. Do not substitute a destination or term-handling behavior that breaks the connection between the clicked suggestion and the results shown.
- Allow time for crawling. Google must crawl a page before terms appear. Its help documentation estimates about one hour on average; if terms are still missing after 48 hours, Google advises contacting the account manager.
Relevance, traffic, and policy requirements
- Show relevant results. A clicked term must resolve to relevant search results, and the search request must transmit exactly the term the visitor clicked. Changing, broadening, or replacing that term can violate Google’s requirements.
- Declare controlled traffic correctly. Google’s help documentation says that, starting November 1, 2025,
referrerAdCreativeis required when controlled traffic—including partner or affiliate traffic—sends visitors to a Related Search for content page. Google’s developer documentation says the parameter must contain the precise creative text used for that controlled source. - Use appropriate pages and placements. Google advises against misleading placements, low-value pages, and pages dominated by ads. The unit should make clear that terms lead to search results, not directly to an article.
- Treat partner-supplied terms as optional, not guaranteed. Partners may provide additional terms, but Google evaluates them and may discard terms that do not meet its relevance, engagement, or performance criteria.
Does it increase AdSense revenue?
It can create another route to search ad impressions: visitors click a relevant term, reach the publisher’s search-results page, and may see search ads there. Google describes possible gains in engagement and incremental revenue, but its launch announcement does not publish a measured revenue increase, conversion rate, or guaranteed result. Actual performance therefore cannot be inferred from the feature’s availability alone.
