It is not one universal Google product or a new Google model. Google documents separate remote MCP servers for Google Workspace and Google Cloud. An MCP-capable host (such as an IDE, CLI, or custom app) discovers the tools exposed by the selected server, authenticates as required, and then uses the permissions of the Google account or Cloud identity to read data or perform supported actions.
What MCP is
MCP is an open protocol that standardizes how an AI application connects to external tools and data. Google Cloud describes three parts:
- Host: the AI application the user operates.
- Client: the component inside that host that speaks MCP.
- Server: a service that exposes capabilities, such as an API, database, or Google product.
A local server commonly communicates over standard input/output (stdio). A managed Google server is remote and communicates over HTTP. The protocol gives the host a consistent way to discover and invoke tools instead of requiring a separate, custom integration for every service. MCP itself is only the connection protocol; it is not an assistant, model, or single “Google MCP” application.
The protocol version Google currently documents
Google’s Cloud overview currently documents MCP version 2026-07-28 and describes its core as stateless. In that description, each request carries the information needed for routing through headers or metadata, rather than depending on the older initialize/initialized handshake and Mcp-Session-Id. Older clients, servers, and tutorials may still describe the earlier session-based behavior, so check compatibility before assuming that examples are interchangeable.

What “Google MCP” can mean
The phrase is ambiguous. In Google’s current documentation it most often refers to one of two separate product areas, with different setup procedures, permissions, and availability.
| Path | Services and typical tasks | Setup and status | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Workspace MCP servers | Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, and Chat. Depending on the service, an AI client may search or retrieve information, draft email, upload files, or schedule meetings. | Product-specific Google Cloud project and API/MCP configuration. Workspace MCP is in Google’s Developer Preview Program. | Workspace content can contain indirect prompt injection, and write-capable tools can change account data. |
| Google Cloud MCP servers | Google Cloud services. The documented Cloud CLI remote server supports gcloud and bq command execution through the Cloud CLI Execution API. |
Cloud identity and service setup. The Cloud CLI remote MCP server is Preview and subject to Pre-GA terms. | Authentication, IAM permissions, and command execution must be checked for the exact endpoint. |
Therefore, “connect Google MCP” is incomplete until you identify the service (for example, Gmail versus BigQuery), the MCP server, and the AI client you plan to use.
How a Google MCP request works
- Choose a compatible host. This may be Gemini CLI, another compatible client, an IDE, or a custom application with an MCP client.
- Select the server. A Workspace server and a Cloud server are different integrations; a Workspace connection does not automatically provide Cloud access.
- Connect over the supported transport. Local servers generally use stdio. Google-managed Workspace and Cloud servers are remote HTTP services.
- Discover capabilities. The client asks what tools the server exposes. The list is service-specific and can change with configuration and permissions.
- Authenticate. The endpoint may require a Google account flow, a Cloud identity, or another supported method. Some endpoints do not require credentials. IAM-protected services do not treat a normal API key as a substitute for an appropriate identity.
- Apply Google authorization. The underlying Workspace or Cloud service evaluates the account, project, IAM roles, API settings, and governance controls. MCP does not bypass those checks.
- Review and execute. The AI host displays returned data or proposes an action. If the tool can create, send, update, or delete something, review the target and parameters before allowing it.
For example, a Gmail search tool may return messages the signed-in account can read. A drafting tool can prepare a reply, but sending it is a separate consequential action if the server exposes that capability. Likewise, a Cloud CLI tool can run only commands allowed by the authenticated identity and the server’s supported command set.
Connecting Gemini or another AI client to Google Workspace
There is no single universal configuration file: the exact labels and authentication screens depend on the client and the Workspace server. Use Google’s current Workspace MCP configuration guide and the client’s MCP documentation together.
1. Create or select the Google Cloud project
Use a project governed by the organization’s normal Workspace and Cloud policies. Decide whether the connection is for a personal account, a test account, or a managed organization before granting access.

2. Enable the required APIs and MCP services
Google’s setup guidance is product-specific:
- Gmail and Chat still require their standard APIs.
- Drive requires its standard API for some tools.
- Calendar does not require its standard API to be enabled for the documented MCP setup.
- The People API handles both standard access and MCP functionality.
- Google Chat use also requires a configured Chat app in the Cloud project.
These requirements can change while the service is in preview. Follow the current product page rather than copying an older blog’s checklist.
3. Add the remote server in the client
In the AI client, add the Workspace MCP server using the client’s remote-MCP settings. Provide the endpoint and authentication method specified by Google and the client. Do not paste a guessed URL or reuse a token intended for a different service.
4. Complete sign-in and consent
Sign in with the account whose Workspace data should be available. Confirm the scopes and organization policy prompts. If a consent screen identifies a different project, publisher, or account than expected, stop and resolve that mismatch before continuing.

5. Verify with a read-only task
Start by listing or searching a small, non-sensitive set of data. Confirm that the result belongs to the intended account and that the client identifies the server and tool being called. Only then test a write action, such as creating a draft rather than sending a message.
Connecting to Google Cloud or the Cloud CLI server
Cloud MCP is a separate path. The documented Google Cloud CLI remote MCP server uses the Cloud CLI Execution API and supports gcloud and bq command execution. Set up the Cloud project, identity, and required services according to Google’s current Cloud CLI remote MCP documentation.
- Choose the Cloud project and the least-privileged identity that should run commands.
- Enable the services required by the documented server, including the Cloud CLI Execution API where specified.
- Configure the MCP-capable host with the remote server endpoint and its supported authentication flow.
- Test a harmless read operation, such as describing a resource or querying permitted metadata.
- Review every command before allowing changes, data export, deletion, or billing-impacting operations.
Cloud identity is not interchangeable with a Workspace OAuth grant. A successful Gmail connection does not prove that gcloud or bq access is configured.
Authentication, permissions, and security
Authentication is endpoint-specific
Google documents multiple authentication approaches for Google and Google Cloud remote MCP servers. Some endpoints may be callable without credentials; IAM-protected services require a supported identity flow. A standard API key should not be assumed to provide IAM authorization. Check the exact server’s current authentication page and the client’s support for that flow.

Least privilege still matters
Grant access only to the account, project, APIs, and scopes needed for the task. MCP exposes the permissions that already exist; it does not reduce the impact of an over-privileged account. Separate test and production projects when possible.
Guard against indirect prompt injection
An email, document, spreadsheet cell, or chat message can contain hidden instructions aimed at the AI client. Treat retrieved Workspace and Cloud content as untrusted input even when it came from a familiar colleague. Connect only servers and clients you trust, keep tool access narrow, and require human review for actions that send, publish, modify, or delete data.
Availability and compatibility checklist
- Workspace MCP is documented as part of the Developer Preview Program.
- The Cloud CLI remote MCP server is documented as Preview and subject to Pre-GA terms.
- Preview access, regions, organization policies, and client support can differ.
- Confirm that your client supports the protocol behavior used by the server, especially if it expects the older initialization handshake.
- Recheck Google’s documentation before production deployment because preview labels and setup requirements can change.
Common problems and fixes
The client cannot discover any tools
Verify that the remote endpoint is configured in the correct MCP section, that the host supports remote HTTP servers, and that the server is available to your account or region. A Workspace server will not expose Cloud CLI tools.
Authentication succeeds but calls are denied
Check the signed-in account, project, API enablement, OAuth scopes, IAM roles, and organization policy. Do not “fix” an IAM error by adding an unrelated API key.
A Gmail, Drive, or Chat operation is missing
Tool availability depends on the service, current preview configuration, enabled APIs, and account permissions. Confirm the product-specific prerequisites; Chat additionally needs a configured Chat app.
The client behaves as if the server is using an old protocol
Compare client and server support for MCP 2026-07-28 and earlier session-based implementations. Update the client or use a server-compatible configuration rather than mixing handshake assumptions.
An AI proposes an unsafe action
Pause execution, inspect the source content and requested parameters, and deny the call. Treat instructions found inside retrieved documents or messages as data, not as trusted commands.

One call is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools named take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
What to remember
- Google MCP is a protocol-based connection, not one standalone Google product.
- Workspace and Cloud integrations are separate and expose different tools.
- Authentication, permissions, preview status, and API prerequisites are server-specific.
- Retrieved content can carry prompt-injection instructions, so review consequential actions.
- Google currently documents MCP 2026-07-28 with a stateless core, while older clients may expect sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
