GIFT Nifty is a set of Nifty-linked derivative contracts traded on NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) in GIFT City, Gujarat. The Nifty 50 is the benchmark stock-market index those contracts are linked to. GIFT Nifty can show how related futures are trading outside India’s domestic cash-market session, but it is not the Nifty 50 itself and cannot guarantee how the index will open.
What is GIFT Nifty?
GIFT Nifty is the name for derivative contracts based on the Nifty 50 and traded on NSE International Exchange in GIFT City. A derivative contract is a tradable instrument whose value is linked to an underlying asset or benchmark. NSE describes the Nifty 50 as the underlying for Nifty 50 futures, while its GIFT Nifty announcement describes derivative contracts traded on NSE IX. NSE’s Nifty 50 F&O page and its GIFT Nifty announcement distinguish the contracts from the benchmark.
Put simply, the Nifty 50 is an index level; GIFT Nifty is a market where Nifty-linked contracts trade. When people refer to GIFT Nifty’s level, they are generally talking about a futures-contract price, not a second version of the Nifty 50 index.
GIFT Nifty vs. Nifty 50
| What to compare | GIFT Nifty | Nifty 50 |
| What it is | Nifty-linked derivative contracts | A benchmark equity index; NSE identifies it as the underlying for Nifty 50 futures |
| Where it trades or is represented | Contracts trade on NSE International Exchange in GIFT City | The index is a benchmark for the Indian domestic equity market; it is not itself a futures contract |
| What its level represents | A derivative-market price that can reflect trading and information outside the domestic cash-market window | The benchmark index level |
| Trading hours | NSE announced almost 21 hours of access at the 2023 launch; check NSE IX for current sessions | An index benchmark, not a derivative trading session; domestic market hours are separate |
| Currency and contract terms | NSE’s 2023 announcement described dollar-denominated Nifty derivatives; confirm current contract specifications with the exchange | NSE publishes Nifty 50 futures specifications; contract details, including permitted lot size, can change |

How did GIFT Nifty get its name?
Nifty derivatives had previously traded on the Singapore Exchange. NSE said those contracts moved to NSE IX and were renamed GIFT Nifty. The exchange’s milestones page records full-scale NSE IX–SGX GIFT Connect operations and the GIFT Nifty identity launch in fiscal year 2023–2024. NSE’s announcement describes the transition; NSE’s milestones page records the launch period.
That history matters because GIFT Nifty is not a newly created benchmark index. It is the name for Nifty-linked derivatives traded through the GIFT City exchange.
Does GIFT Nifty predict the Nifty 50 opening?
It can serve as an overnight reference: because GIFT Nifty contracts have had trading access beyond the domestic cash-market window, their price may reflect information available while the Indian cash market is closed. NSE described access at launch in 2023 as “almost 21 hours,” spanning Asian, European and US trading hours. That is a launch-era description, not a promise of a permanently fixed schedule. NSE’s 2023 announcement provides the figure.
However, a GIFT Nifty move is not a guarantee of the Nifty 50’s opening direction or level. Prices can change before the domestic market opens, and a futures contract is not the same observation as the spot index. The official exchange sources establish the relationship and extended access; they do not establish a forecast-accuracy rate.

For a meaningful price comparison, identify exactly what is being compared: GIFT Nifty futures versus the Nifty 50 spot index, or GIFT Nifty futures versus domestic Nifty futures. Include the contract expiry and time of observation. These instruments are not interchangeable, and there is no single fixed gap supported by the exchange information.

At launch in 2023, NSE described GIFT Nifty access as “almost 21 hours.” NSE IX’s FAQ, dated 2024, lists market hours of 06:30 to 02:45 the next day, Indian Standard Time. Because trading sessions and holidays can change, check the exchange’s current NSE IX trading-hours page or latest circular before relying on exact hours. The 2024 FAQ is available at NSE IX FAQs.

What should traders verify before comparing contracts?
- Instrument: Confirm whether a quoted figure is GIFT Nifty futures, domestic Nifty futures, or the Nifty 50 spot index.
- Expiry: Futures with different expiries can have different prices; compare the same contract period when possible.
- Observation time: Note when each price was recorded, since markets may be trading at different times.
- Current specifications: Check the exchange’s latest contract information for terms such as lot size and settlement details. NSE notes that permitted lot size may be changed by the exchange on its Nifty 50 F&O page.
