HybridOS is the software and controls layer—not a battery or a standalone home-storage product.
What FlexGen does
FlexGen describes its work as designing and integrating battery energy storage solutions, supplying the software used to operate them, and providing project and lifecycle support. It serves organizations such as utilities, developers, independent power producers, engineering and construction firms, municipalities, cooperatives, and critical-infrastructure operators. FlexGen’s company website describes integrated project delivery, analytics, and lifecycle services.
That distinction matters: FlexGen is an integrator and software provider, and the available company information does not establish that it manufactures every battery used in its projects. The actual battery, inverter, and other equipment depend on the project.
What makes up a FlexGen energy storage system?
A battery energy storage system (BESS) is a coordinated installation, not simply a container of batteries. FlexGen’s Battery Storage 101 infographic identifies components including:
- Battery cells that store energy chemically
- Inverters and transformers that manage conversion and connection to the site or grid
- A battery management system (BMS) that monitors battery operation
- Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment for thermal management
- Fire-suppression equipment
- An EMS and digital controls for monitoring and dispatch
The equipment arrangement and specifications vary by project. The EMS works alongside the battery and power equipment; it does not replace those physical components.
How the system works
- Charge: Electricity from the grid or a generation source flows into the battery system.
- Store: The batteries hold that energy in chemical form.
- Convert and control: Inverters and related power equipment manage electricity so it can serve the site or interact with the grid.
- Monitor and schedule: The EMS tracks the installation and directs charging or discharging according to the operating plan and system limits.
- Dispatch: When scheduled or needed, the system sends stored power to the site or grid—for example, during high demand or when grid support is required.
FlexGen describes the battery, inverter, and grid as communicating through its EMS. Its HybridOS product page describes remote battery controls, charge and discharge adjustments, scheduling, and grid interaction. The EMS coordinates operation; it does not create energy or remove the physical limits of the batteries and power equipment.
What HybridOS does
FlexGen presents HybridOS as a configurable, hardware-agnostic EMS for energy-storage sites and fleets. In practical terms, it is the software layer operators use to monitor assets, set or automate operating schedules, control battery activity, and coordinate dispatch. The company also says the platform can be used for solar power plant control. Capabilities at a particular site depend on how the system is configured and implemented.

Hardware-agnostic means FlexGen describes the software as able to work across hardware configurations; it does not by itself establish that every device, feature, or project configuration is compatible. Operators should confirm interoperability and the functions included for a specific installation.
What FlexGen’s published figures mean
FlexGen’s homepage currently reports more than 100 energy storage projects completed, more than 25 GWh completed and under contract, 1.6 million hours of battery runtime, and 99.95% uptime during the 2021 Texas freeze. These are company-published figures; the page does not provide an independent audit or a publication date for the claims. The uptime figure is specifically associated with the 2021 event, not a general uptime guarantee for every FlexGen system.

What to check when evaluating a project
The available information explains FlexGen’s stated offering and basic BESS architecture, but does not provide comparable bids, pricing, or independent vendor-performance evaluations. For a real project, compare proposals on the details that determine whether the system fits its intended use:
- Power and energy capacity, and how long the system is expected to discharge at the required output
- Use case and dispatch strategy, including the site’s operating needs
- Battery, inverter, and other equipment configuration
- EMS functions, interoperability, and controls included in the proposed implementation
- Safety provisions, thermal management, and fire-protection design
- Lifecycle service scope and any availability commitments
- Project cost and the assumptions behind expected market revenue
