FileZilla is a file-transfer software project. Its FileZilla Client is desktop software that connects to a remote server and transfers files; the project also offers a separate FileZilla Server program. The Client supports FTP, FTPS, and SFTP, which are distinct protocols—not interchangeable names for the same thing.
What FileZilla does—and what it does not do
FileZilla Client lets you connect from your computer to a compatible remote server to transfer files. You need the connection details for that server, and a service at the other end that supports the protocol you use. FileZilla is the transfer tool; it is not the remote files, a hosting provider, or the server you connect to. The Debian package man page describes FileZilla as a client for FTP, FTPS, and SFTP: Debian’s FileZilla man page.
FileZilla Client and FileZilla Server are different programs
The Client initiates a connection to a remote server, typically to upload, download, or manage files. FileZilla Server is a separate server-side offering. The project lists them separately and maintains separate documentation for their roles. If your goal is to connect to a hosting account or another remote service, the Client is the relevant program; running FileZilla Server is a different task. See the official FileZilla project website and its documentation directory.
FTP, FTPS, and SFTP: why the choice matters
FileZilla Client supports three transfer protocols, but they work differently. The server administrator or hosting provider determines which one is available, so use the connection method and details they supply. FileZilla Pro’s protocol documentation explains that these protocols differ in their mechanics and can behave differently through firewalls: FileZilla’s protocol overview.
#1 Best Overall
| Protocol | What to know |
|---|---|
| FTP | A file-transfer protocol. Its connection and firewall behavior differ from FTPS and SFTP. |
| FTPS | FTP secured with TLS. The server must support and be configured for the relevant FTPS mode. |
| SFTP | A file-transfer protocol associated with SSH; it is not simply FTP with encryption. The server must offer SFTP. |
Do not choose a protocol based only on its name. Confirm what the remote service supports and use the host, port, credentials, and any key or encryption settings it provides. The right choice—and whether a connection works through a firewall—depends on the server configuration and network.
