FileBrowser Quantum is free, open-source software you run on a server you control to browse and manage files in a web browser. The server exposes storage locations that its operator configures, while authentication and permissions determine which files and actions each user can access. It is a self-hosted file manager, not a hosted cloud-storage account.

What FileBrowser Quantum is—and how it differs from File Browser

Quantum is a separate fork of the original File Browser project, not simply another name for it. Its maintainers describe additions including multiple storage sources, expanded authentication, indexed search, configurable sharing, scoped permissions, API tokens, and the removal of shell-command functionality. Because the projects are distinct, their releases, features, security status, and setup instructions should not be treated as interchangeable. See the Quantum project repository and its official documentation.

The original File Browser repository says it was archived on September 1, 2026, and will receive no further releases, bug fixes, or security fixes. That notice applies to the original repository; it does not establish Quantum’s maintenance status. Check Quantum’s own release information when deciding whether and how to deploy it: original File Browser repository.

How a web file manager works

A web file manager puts a browser interface between users and files stored on a server. In Quantum’s case, the operator configures storage sources and access rules; the service presents files and permitted actions to users. The application mediates file operations on those configured sources, rather than asking each user to navigate the server’s ordinary filesystem directly. This describes the workflow implied by Quantum’s documented deployment and features.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. The operator runs the service. Quantum can run as a server application, including with documented Docker examples. The host must be able to access the storage paths the operator intends to expose.
  2. The operator configures sources and access. The YAML configuration can define server settings, storage sources, authentication, users, and permissions. Access can be granted to users or groups within configured source paths. The official documentation explains the setup and configuration.
  3. Users connect in a browser. They see files and actions available to them, such as listing files, previews, editing, search, and configured shares.
  4. The service performs permitted actions. Depending on configuration and permissions, users can manage files through the interface without direct access to the host’s filesystem tools.

Self-hosting also means the operator is responsible for the server, storage, network access, backups, updates, and configuration. Quantum provides the file-management application; it does not by itself provide a managed cloud-storage service or take over those operational responsibilities.

What Quantum can do

  • Offer several authentication routes. The project lists OIDC, LDAP, external JWT, password with two-factor authentication, and proxy authentication. Availability depends on the deployment’s configuration and integrations.
  • Limit access and configure shares. Permissions can be scoped by user or group and source path. Share settings can include an expiry, permitted users, and whether recipients may view, edit, or upload files.
  • Search indexed files. Quantum describes fast search backed by SQLite-based indexing, with filters and real-time results. Scan frequency and source complexity affect resource needs.
  • Preview, edit, and connect to files. The project lists browser previews and editing, thumbnails, and WebDAV access. Some office or media features may depend on integrations described in its documentation.
  • Support administration and integration. Documentation includes long-lived API tokens and Swagger API documentation; the feature index also lists activity and quota features.
  • Exclude shell-command functionality. The Quantum maintainer says this functionality was removed from the fork. Do not assume that statement describes the original File Browser project.

Feature availability can depend on setup, so consult the official documentation for the configuration and integrations relevant to a particular deployment.

Version, migration, and resource considerations

The official About page identifies v2.0.0 as beta while also saying stable releases are available on the main release channel. Check Quantum’s current release notes before installing, because version labels and available releases can change.

The v2.0.0 configuration guide is specific to that version. It says v2 uses a SQLite database and the server.database.path setting, removes deprecated flat configuration formats, and moves HTTP settings from server to http. Anyone upgrading from v1.x should use the project’s migration guide rather than copying an older configuration unchanged. Consult the official configuration and migration documentation.

Quantum’s documentation lists 256 MB as its minimum memory requirement (FileBrowser Quantum documentation, 2026). That is the project’s stated minimum, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee that a particular workload will run well. Configured sources, index scan frequency, source complexity, and cache settings affect CPU use, storage I/O, and typical memory requirements.

Is Quantum the right kind of file access?

Quantum may suit someone who wants to host file access on their own server and make configured files available through a browser, with controls for users, groups, and shares. It is not automatically a substitute for a hosted storage service or a broader collaboration platform: the fit depends on who will operate the server, what storage and integrations are needed, and how much administration the user is prepared to handle.

Quantum’s own documentation includes a comparison with Filebrowser, Filestash, Nextcloud, Google Drive, and FileRun; verify competitor-specific claims directly with each project before relying on them.
