Fiber-optic internet sends data as pulses of light through thin strands of glass. With fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) or fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP), the provider’s fiber access network reaches your home or building. A fiber jack or optical terminal passes the connection to a gateway or router, which then connects devices over Ethernet or Wi-Fi. The fiber connection and your home Wi-Fi are separate parts of the service.
How does fiber-optic internet work?
A fiber connection carries information along an optical access network, then hands it off to equipment that creates your home network. The exact equipment and network architecture vary by provider; not every subscriber has the same boxes or uses the same access standard.
- Data is encoded as light. A provider’s network equipment converts data into optical signals and sends them through glass fiber. The Fiber Broadband Association explains that lasers commonly create the light pulses and that multiple streams can travel on different wavelengths. This describes the transmission mechanism, not a comparative performance test.
- The access network carries the signal toward your premises. Fiber links the provider network to the neighborhood and, for FTTH/FTTP, continues to the subscriber’s home or building.
- An optical terminal or fiber jack hands off the connection. Equipment at the premises converts or passes the optical connection to customer networking equipment. The device may be called an optical network terminal (ONT), optical network unit (ONU), or fiber jack, depending on the provider’s setup.
- A gateway or router connects your devices. The router creates the local network and provides access through Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or both. Wi-Fi is a local wireless link from the router to your devices; it is not the fiber connection itself.
The FCC’s archived Getting Broadband Q&A, last reviewed in 2020, describes fiber as carrying light through transparent glass fibers. Its explanation remains useful for the basic mechanism, but it is not a current guide to plans or equipment.
What does FTTH or FTTP mean?
FTTH means fiber-to-the-home, and FTTP means fiber-to-the-premises. Both describe an access network in which fiber reaches the subscriber’s home or premises. The terms distinguish that arrangement from services where the provider’s fiber stops elsewhere and another technology carries the connection to the premises. Check the specific provider’s description if you need to know how a service is delivered at your address.

Does fiber mean faster internet or faster Wi-Fi?
Fiber infrastructure can carry substantial capacity, but that does not mean every fiber plan delivers the same speed or that a customer is guaranteed the plan’s advertised rate at every device. The subscribed plan, provider configuration, and local equipment affect the service received. In an archived consumer FAQ, the FCC also notes that experienced speed depends in part on how close the provider brings fiber to the computer and how the service is configured.
A wired connection can perform well while Wi-Fi is weak in some rooms. Wi-Fi coverage depends on the home’s layout and construction, as well as router and device hardware. If one room has poor service, that does not by itself establish a problem with the fiber line; compare a wired connection near the gateway with Wi-Fi in the affected location.

How does fiber compare with cable, DSL, and wireless internet?
There is no universal winner based on technology name alone. Fiber has high-capacity infrastructure, but service quality, price, and availability depend on the address and plan. Compare the actual offers at your location rather than assuming every fiber plan is faster, cheaper, or more reliable than every alternative.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Availability at your exact address | A technology may be available nearby but not serviceable at your location. |
| Advertised download and upload speeds | Plans and technologies can differ in both directions; compare the specific plan, not just the word “fiber.” |
| Total price and fees | Include installation, equipment, and any other charges shown by the provider. |
| Contract, data, and cancellation terms | These terms affect the cost and flexibility of the offer. |
| Included network equipment | Check what gateway, router, or optical equipment the provider supplies and whether you may use your own router. |
| Actual performance and latency | Advertised maximum speeds are not measurements of the service you will experience. |
The FCC’s archived consumer FAQ contrasts fiber access with Wi-Fi as a short-range local wireless connection. Treat it as background on the distinction, not as current plan guidance.

How can you check whether fiber is available at your address?
- Enter your location in the FCC National Broadband Map to see reported fixed-broadband providers, technologies, and maximum advertised upload and download speeds for locations in the United States.
- Check whether the map lists fiber at your specific location, then compare the listed providers and advertised speeds.
- Contact the provider to confirm serviceability, plan details, installation conditions, equipment, and total price. A map listing is not a guarantee of a particular installation experience or cost.
- If the map’s listing is inaccurate, use the FCC’s process to submit a challenge. Providers submit fixed-location availability information twice yearly, and the map reflects provider reports under FCC availability criteria.
The map is a starting point, not a performance or affordability measure. It shows reported availability and advertised maximum speeds; it does not establish actual service performance or whether a plan is affordable.

Start with the equipment supplied or required by your provider. Depending on the setup, the optical terminal or fiber jack connects to a gateway or router; a personal router does not replace the provider’s optical termination equipment.
