Elpher is a browser-like package that runs inside GNU Emacs. It lets you visit Gopher and Gemini pages, use Finger, and follow web links from text—without being a standalone browser. Start it with M-x elpher.

What is Elpher?

Elpher is a free software package for GNU Emacs that combines Gopher and Gemini browsing. The project also describes support for Finger and clickable web links in text. It provides keyboard and mouse navigation, works with Evil mode, and can display image files directly. Elpher project README

Elpher is available through NonGNU ELPA and MELPA. The NonGNU ELPA listing gives version 3.7.0, released February 21, 2026. Emacs 28 and later generally include NonGNU ELPA by default; Emacs 27 users may need to enable the archive first. NonGNU ELPA package listing

How do you install and launch Elpher?

  1. In Emacs, install the package with M-x package-install, then enter elpher. If you use Emacs 27 and the package is not available, enable the NonGNU ELPA archive before installing.

  2. Launch the client by running M-x elpher. The project README documents this command. Elpher project README

How do you navigate pages?

Elpher uses familiar Emacs key commands to move through linked text:

  • TAB moves to the next link; Shift-TAB moves to the previous one.
  • RET opens the selected link.
  • u returns to the previous page.
  • R reloads the current page.

Elpher caches page content and cursor position for the current Emacs session, so returning to a visited page can restore where you were. The cache is session-scoped; it is not a promise of persistent storage across Emacs restarts. Elpher manual

What can Elpher display and customize?

The project documents configurable presentation for Gopher directories and Gemini pages, link-name completion, bookmarks, and clickable Gopher and web links in plain text. It can also display image files directly. These features make it useful for navigating text-oriented resources from within Emacs rather than switching to a separate browser. Elpher project README

How are Gopher and Gemini security different?

Gemini connections use TLS, and Elpher handles Gemini TLS automatically. The manual describes certificate validation following the protocol’s recommended Trust On First Use (TOFU) approach. Elpher manual

Do not assume the same protection for ordinary Gopher connections. RFC 4266 says the Gopher protocol uses cleartext passwords for authentication and provides no privacy. Elpher can connect to Gopher servers using TLS, but that capability does not mean every Gopher server supports TLS or that every connection is encrypted. Check the specific endpoint and connection rather than treating Gopher as secure by default. RFC 4266: The Gopher URI Scheme

Who is Elpher for?

Elpher suits people who already use GNU Emacs and want to browse Gopher or Gemini resources in that environment. It is not a standalone browser, and the sources document its functions rather than independent performance or usability testing. If you are new to Emacs, you will need to be comfortable with its package system and commands to get started.
