DevHome.PI.exe is associated with Microsoft’s Dev Home app in secondary reporting, but Microsoft’s official Dev Home pages do not confirm that exact executable name or prove that any particular file with that name is genuine. Dev Home itself is a developer-focused Windows app for setting up a PC, monitoring system information, and managing projects. If you want to remove the app, use Windows’ normal uninstall options; if the file looks suspicious, check its details and scan the device rather than trusting its name.

What is DevHome.PI.exe?

Dev Home is Microsoft software intended for developers. Microsoft introduced it as a place to configure a development machine, monitor system information, and manage projects. Its announcement also described Dev Drive-related improvements, but those are separate from the identity or performance of the executable discussed here. Microsoft’s May 30, 2023 announcement explains the app’s purpose.

A WindowsReport article updated October 24, 2024 associates DevHome.PI.exe with Dev Home. However, the Microsoft Dev Home announcement and repository do not name this executable. That means the filename alone cannot establish that a file on your PC is authentic, safe, or part of the installed app. Its location, publisher signature, and behavior matter. WindowsReport’s coverage is a secondary source, not Microsoft confirmation of a particular file.

Is DevHome.PI.exe malware?

There is not enough evidence to label every file with this name either safe or malicious. First distinguish the installed app named Dev Home from a standalone file that merely has a similar name. Check whether Dev Home appears in your installed apps, and inspect the executable’s file location and publisher signature. If its details are unexpected, or you noticed suspicious behavior, treat it as a file that needs checking—not as proof that Dev Home itself is malware.

Microsoft classifies potentially unwanted apps separately from malware and recommends removing software you do not want, updating Microsoft Defender security intelligence, and running a full scan. If unwanted software remains, Microsoft advises using Microsoft Defender Offline. See Microsoft’s guidance on potentially unwanted applications.

How to uninstall the Dev Home app

Find the app entry before removing anything. Microsoft documents these general uninstall routes for Windows 10 and Windows 11; the available controls can vary on a particular PC or an organization-managed device.

Get-AppxPackage *Windows.DevHome* | Remove-AppxPackage

This is a secondary-source method, not the procedure documented on Microsoft’s support page cited above. Its effectiveness may depend on the package state, account, and device management policies. Use the Windows interface first, especially on a work or school PC, and do not assume the command removes the package for every user or organization-managed device.

Should you delete the executable manually?

Do not make deleting an isolated .exe your default uninstall method. If Dev Home is installed, remove it through Windows’ app controls. If a file appears outside the expected context or you cannot verify its publisher, use Defender to assess the device instead of assuming that deleting one file removes the app or resolves a security issue.

What Microsoft says about Dev Home’s status

Microsoft’s Dev Home repository says the app was going away in May 2025, with some features moving elsewhere. The repository’s published compatibility notes list Windows 11 version 21H2 (build 22000) or newer and Windows 10 version 22H2 (build 19045) or newer. These are project notes, not a diagnosis of what is installed on an individual PC today. Check the actual app listing and Windows build on your machine. Microsoft’s Dev Home repository provides the project information.
