DenseNet (Dense Convolutional Network) is a convolutional neural network architecture in which every layer inside a dense block receives the feature maps produced by all earlier layers in that block. Each layer adds a small set of new feature maps, and later layers reuse them. This connectivity pattern is the defining difference from a conventional CNN, where information usually passes along a chain of layers.
How DenseNet’s connections work
In a conventional L-layer chain, each layer passes its output to the next. In a DenseNet dense block, layer inputs are formed by concatenating the feature maps from all preceding layers. The new feature maps from each layer are also passed forward to every later layer in the block. The original paper describes this design as having L(L+1)/2 direct connections for an L-layer network.
That does not mean the entire network is one uninterrupted dense block. Dense connections operate within blocks; transition layers connect those blocks.
What happens inside a dense block
A layer in a dense block takes the feature maps accumulated so far, applies a transformation, and contributes new feature maps. The block concatenates these new maps with the existing ones for subsequent layers. As a result, the depth of the feature representation grows as the block proceeds.

Growth rate
The growth rate, written as k, is the number of new feature maps contributed by each layer. It is not the total number of feature maps in that layer’s input: that input includes the maps from earlier layers as well. The original paper illustrates a five-layer block with a growth rate of k = 4.
How transition layers connect blocks
Feature depth increases within a dense block, while spatial dimensions are reduced between blocks. In the original architecture, transition layers use convolution and pooling operations to connect blocks and reduce the feature-map dimensions. This lets the network continue processing at a smaller spatial scale.

What DenseNet-BC adds
DenseNet-BC is a variant that uses bottleneck layers and compression. A bottleneck layer uses a 1×1 convolution; compression reduces the number of feature channels at transition layers. The authors’ code repository identifies BC as its default architecture and describes a channel-compression factor of 0.5. That is a configuration in the authors’ implementation, not a requirement for every DenseNet implementation.
Why the authors proposed dense connectivity
The short paths between earlier and later layers were intended to improve information and gradient flow, while making it easier to reuse features. The authors’ 2017 abstract says DenseNets “alleviate the vanishing-gradient problem, strengthen feature propagation, encourage feature reuse, and substantially reduce the number of parameters.” These are the paper authors’ reported motivations and findings, not guarantees for every dataset or implementation.

What the original results do—and do not—show
The CVPR 2017 paper evaluated DenseNet on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, SVHN, and ImageNet. Its abstract reports significant improvements over the state of the art at that time on most of those tasks, as well as less memory and computation to achieve high performance. Those claims describe the authors’ experiments and comparisons in 2017; they do not establish that DenseNet currently leads those benchmarks or is always cheaper than newer architectures.
Dense connectivity and parameter efficiency also do not guarantee low peak activation memory, fast inference, or a particular hardware requirement. The cited original sources do not establish universal runtime or hardware recommendations. For a contemporary comparison with another model, compare matched implementations and conditions, including parameter count, compute, peak activation memory, accuracy on the same dataset, training setup, and inference latency.
