Deno Sandbox is Deno Deploy’s hosted Linux microVM service for running generated or otherwise untrusted code. Announced in beta on February 3, 2026, it gives developers an API and SDKs to create isolated sandboxes, control outbound network access, and configure secrets for approved destinations. Those controls are part of Deno’s documented design—not evidence of an independent security audit.
Why Deno launched Sandbox
Deno’s February 3, 2026 announcement describes a growing need to run code written by AI systems without first having a person review every line. An agent might need to execute code and call an external API using a real credential. That creates two related risks: the code needs a boundary around its compute environment, and its access to networks and secrets needs to be controlled. Deno presents Sandbox as a way to address both. Deno’s launch announcement frames this as the product’s motivation, not as proof that every AI-generated program can be made safe.
How Deno Sandbox works
Deno describes each sandbox as a lightweight Linux microVM with an isolated filesystem, network stack, and process tree. Developers create and operate sandboxes programmatically through JavaScript/TypeScript or Python SDKs, or through the REST API. The documented workflows include uploading files, starting processes, and running background services. The Sandbox product page lists Node.js 24+ and Python 3.10+ for its documented SDKs; check the current documentation for compatibility before building around a particular runtime.
Deno’s documentation says sandbox startup takes milliseconds, while its current product page claims startup in under 200 ms. The launch announcement used a different claim—under one second. These are vendor statements, not independently benchmarked results, and the figures vary across Deno’s materials. Deno’s Sandbox documentation describes the API-driven lifecycle.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ephemeral by default, with optional persistence
A sandbox starts from a clean disk image. Uploaded files last only for the sandbox’s lifetime unless a volume is mounted; volumes can be configured as read-only. Deno says the VM is destroyed and its disk wiped when it is killed or its final reference is dropped. The launch post also describes snapshots and persistent storage. This default suits temporary execution, but applications that need durable state must deliberately choose and manage persistence. See Deno’s security documentation for the lifecycle details.
Network policies and secrets are central to the security model
Deno documents hypervisor-level VM isolation, outbound network policies, and secret substitution for approved hosts. A developer can configure a secret for a permitted destination so the sandbox process does not receive the credential as an ordinary environment value; Deno says the value is substituted into an outbound request to an approved host. The intended benefit is to reduce direct access to credentials by generated code.

That protection depends on configuration. Deno’s security documentation explicitly says that when allowNet is omitted, all outbound requests are allowed. Developers should define the destinations the workload actually needs rather than assume network access is blocked by default. Secret substitution should not be read as a guarantee that credentials cannot be misused or exfiltrated in every configuration. The launch announcement demonstrates the approach, while the security documentation explains the network-policy behavior.
Deno also says commands, HTTP requests, and SSH sessions can be traced in the Deploy dashboard, with metadata available for attribution. Those are documented product capabilities; they do not establish an independently assessed audit or logging guarantee.

Limits, regions, and pricing
Deno’s general documentation lists a 2-vCPU configuration, configurable memory from 768 MB to 4096 MB (1.2 GB by default), a 10 GB ephemeral disk, and a maximum configurable lifetime of 30 minutes. It lists Amsterdam (ams) and Chicago (ord) regions. Concurrency figures are inconsistent across Deno’s materials: the general documentation gives a default pre-release limit of five per organization, while the product page’s pricing display gives a default of three. Confirm the applicable limit for your account and region in current documentation or the dashboard rather than relying on either default.
The current product page lists $0.10 per CPU-hour, $0.025 per GiB-hour of memory, and $0.20 per GiB-month of volume. Deno’s pricing page says sandbox compute uses the plan’s CPU, memory, and egress meters, with availability, concurrency, and volume storage varying by plan. These rates and entitlements can change, so check Deno Deploy’s live pricing page before estimating costs. The February launch announcement quoted historical rates of $0.05 per CPU-hour and $0.016 per GB-hour of memory; those are not the current product page rates.

Public HTTP exposure needs a separate access-control decision
A sandbox can expose an HTTP service, but Deno warns that the target service is publicly accessible without authentication. Do not assume the sandbox boundary itself protects an exposed endpoint. Add appropriate access controls for the service’s purpose, and consider using a persistent Deno Deploy app for a service intended to run long-term. Deno’s warning and guidance are in its Expose HTTP documentation.
When it may fit—and what to verify
Deno lists AI agents and copilots, plugin systems, collaborative coding, ephemeral CI and smoke tests, customer-supplied code, and preview environments as intended use cases. Whether it fits a particular workload depends on its trust boundary, runtime requirements, network needs, persistence, lifetime, region, and plan limits. Before adoption, verify the current beta and availability status, SDK/runtime support, account-specific concurrency, region choices, network defaults, exposed-service access controls, and full costs including egress and storage. Deno’s published performance, security, limits, and pricing statements are vendor documentation; no independent benchmark or third-party security audit is established here.
