Deadlock is Valve’s multiplayer game in early development, blending third-person shooting and hero abilities with MOBA-style lanes, team objectives, and in-match progression. In the current playtest description, two teams of six collect Souls, buy items, upgrade abilities, and push three lanes toward the enemy Patron. Valve’s Steam listing says access is limited to friend invites through playtesters; the game is not yet available on Steam and has no announced release date. These details can change.

What kind of game is Deadlock?

Deadlock combines two familiar styles of play. The camera and combat are third-person, so aiming and shooting are central. At the same time, teams manage lane pressure, character progression, and shared objectives in a way associated with a MOBA.

That is a plain-language description of the current playtest, not an official Valve genre definition. It is more useful to think of Deadlock as a shooter with MOBA systems woven into the match than as a conventional shooter with a few extra abilities.

How do you play Deadlock?

A third-party beginner guide describes the current playtest as a six-versus-six match built around three lanes and a push toward the enemy Patron. Players fight with their heroes, earn Souls, spend them on items, and upgrade abilities. The shooting and abilities help decide individual encounters; lane progress and objectives give those encounters a team-level purpose. DramaLock’s beginner guide, published May 11, 2026 and updated July 21, 2026, outlines this loop.

  1. Fight and collect Souls. Souls are the progression resource in the guide’s description of the playtest.
  2. Spend Souls on items and improve abilities. These choices develop your hero during the match.
  3. Work with your team to pressure lanes and contest objectives. The aim is to turn combat and progression into forward movement toward the enemy Patron.

The exact rules and balance may change between updates. Valve describes the game as early development, with experimental gameplay.

Is Deadlock a MOBA or a shooter?

It borrows from both, but the mix matters more than picking one label. Compared with a typical top-down, click-targeted MOBA, Deadlock uses third-person aiming and shooting. Compared with a conventional shooter, its lane progression, team objectives, and Souls-based item and ability development make the wider match plan more important than winning isolated fights.

The available descriptions support that broad distinction, but not a detailed comparison with any specific game. Treat familiar genre labels as a guide to the blend, not a claim that Deadlock follows another title’s exact format.

What is Deadlock’s current status and how can you get access?

Valve’s Steam listing for Deadlock, checked October 7, 2026, calls it “a multiplayer game in early development.” It also says, “Access to Deadlock is currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters.” The listing says the game is not yet available on Steam and its release date is to be announced.

In practical terms, the listing describes invite-limited playtest access, not an open Steam release. It does not provide a release date. Because access and development status are volatile, check the Steam listing for the latest information rather than relying on older access instructions.

What should a beginner keep in mind?

  • Plan beyond your next fight. Combat contributes to a larger effort to build progression, pressure lanes, and advance with your team.
  • Expect change. Valve says the game is in early development, with temporary art and experimental gameplay; mechanics described for the playtest may evolve.
  • Do not assume a public launch. The Steam listing describes limited invites and no announced release date, rather than general availability.
