In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the custom streaming server option, and enter the URL and key supplied by the platform or event host. The destination—not OBS—provides the connection details.
What custom RTMP means
RTMP is a streaming protocol. “Custom RTMP” is commonly shorthand for manually configuring an encoder to send a stream to an RTMP-compatible destination; it is not a separate protocol. OBS describes its custom server option as a place to enter the server URL and stream key. OBS’s streaming guide describes selecting an included service or setting a custom streaming server.
- Ingest URL or server URL: tells the encoder where to send the stream.
- Stream key: a destination-issued credential or identifier that lets the destination associate and authorize the incoming stream. Treat it like a password; Twitch, for example, says an encoder needs the user’s unique key to go live. Twitch’s ingest recommendations explain this role.
Custom setup is useful when a platform, event host, private server, or relay accepts an encoder connection but does not appear as a one-click preset. You do not inherently need a webcam, capture card, or special camera to configure it; those are possible video sources, not requirements of the URL-and-key setup itself. OBS’s quick-start guide lists possible sources such as webcams and capture cards.
RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and SRT: choose the destination’s protocol
The word “custom” does not tell you which protocol to use. Follow the receiving service’s current instructions for protocol, endpoint, port, codecs, and stream settings.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL, encrypting the connection in transit. YouTube recommends RTMPS, and Vimeo explains the security distinction. Prefer it when both the destination and encoder support it. YouTube’s live encoder settings; Vimeo’s protocol overview.
- HLS is a separate ingestion option YouTube documents for supported cases, including some codecs RTMP may not accept. Use it only when the destination and workflow call for it. YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- SRT is also distinct from RTMP. Vimeo supports RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT, but notes that SRT has different compatibility and feature constraints. Check that the platform, encoder, and needed features all support it before choosing it. Vimeo’s protocol overview.
There is no universal bitrate, codec, or latency value to copy across services. YouTube and Vimeo publish their own ingestion requirements; use the target’s current specifications rather than settings from an unrelated platform or an old guide. YouTube’s settings; Vimeo’s protocol information.
How to add a custom RTMP server in OBS
- Get the destination details. In the platform’s live control room or event setup, create or select the broadcast, then copy its current ingest/server URL and stream key. Some services issue an event-specific key, so do not assume a key or URL from another event or account will work. Twitch’s URL pattern is an illustration, not an endpoint to paste for another service. Twitch’s ingest recommendations; Vimeo OTT’s OBS setup.
- Open OBS’s stream settings. Go to Settings → Stream. In the service menu, select the custom streaming server option. The exact wording may vary by OBS version; Vimeo OTT’s guide uses the same custom destination mapping. OBS’s custom-services guide; Vimeo OTT’s OBS setup.
- Enter the URL and key separately. Paste the destination’s server URL into the server field and the matching stream key into the key field. If the destination specifies RTMPS, a port, or other connection details, follow those instructions exactly; do not substitute an RTMP endpoint or guessed port.
- Match the destination’s technical requirements. Confirm protocol, encoder, output, and network settings against the receiving service’s current specifications. Do not transplant bitrate or codec numbers from another platform. YouTube’s ingestion documentation.
- Test before the real event. If the destination offers a private, unlisted, or otherwise low-risk test, send a short test stream. Confirm that its preview or status shows both audio and video before going public. OBS recommends testing in advance; Vimeo’s custom-destination instructions also advise confirming incoming audio and video. OBS’s quick-start guide; Vimeo’s custom-destination instructions.
- Start the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS and verify that the destination reports an incoming signal. Follow the platform’s separate controls for previewing, scheduling, and making the broadcast public.
Other encoders may label these fields differently. The mapping remains the same: the destination’s URL goes in the server/ingest field, and its corresponding key goes in the key field. Use that encoder’s interface documentation if the labels are unclear.

Where to find the URL and stream key
Look in the destination’s live control room, event setup, or encoder instructions—not in OBS. Create or select the specific event or broadcast first if the platform issues event-specific details. Copy both values as a pair and check for extra spaces or omitted characters when pasting.
A stream key is sensitive because it authorizes an encoder to send a stream to your destination. Do not post it in a screenshot, recording, or support forum. If it becomes visible, treat it as exposed and regenerate or replace it using that platform’s account controls; exact reset steps differ by service. Twitch’s explanation of stream keys.

Why OBS may not connect
- Connection rejected or no ingest detected: confirm the event is active or ready to receive, and that the URL and key belong to that event and account. Check that you selected the expected RTMP or RTMPS variant. For YouTube RTMPS, an incorrect server name, port, or SSL setup can cause errors. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
- Video arrives but audio does not: check OBS’s selected audio source and output settings, then inspect the destination’s preview or status to see whether audio is arriving. Vimeo specifically advises confirming both audio and video for a custom destination. Vimeo’s custom-destination instructions.
- The key may have leaked: stop relying on that key and regenerate it through the destination’s account controls. Do not include the replacement in screenshots or public support messages.
- The connection is poor or interrupted: inspect the encoder log and network connection, and check whether the destination and encoder support a different protocol for this workflow. Vimeo notes that RTMP can struggle under poor network conditions; SRT may suit some unstable-network workflows, but compatibility and features must be checked first. No protocol guarantees a particular latency or bitrate result. Vimeo’s protocol overview.
- The option or event is unavailable: confirm the destination account’s plan and event eligibility. Vimeo OTT’s OBS instructions limit live-event streaming to Growth and Enterprise sellers, while Vimeo’s custom simulcast instructions specify eligible plans. Check current plan terms with the destination before relying on the feature. Vimeo OTT’s OBS setup; Vimeo’s custom simulcast instructions.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that should keep uploaded videos live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different workflow from connecting OBS to a custom RTMP destination: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.
