conhost.exe is Windows Console Host, a legitimate Windows component that supports command-line applications. Its presence is normally expected, but the filename alone cannot confirm that a particular file is genuine. If one instance is using sustained high CPU, investigate the application associated with it rather than assuming that conhost.exe itself is the cause.
What is conhost.exe?
Microsoft describes Windows Console Host as both the server application for Windows Console APIs and the classic Windows interface for command-line applications. In other words, command-line software may use conhost.exe to communicate with Windows console functions and display or manage its console session. Microsoft’s Windows Console definitions explain the component’s role.
Microsoft’s security-history account describes a design change in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: a separate conhost.exe process ran with the same credentials as the associated console application. That is a version-specific historical detail, not a description of every current Windows release. See Microsoft’s MS11-056 security advisory.
Is conhost.exe a virus?
The Windows component is legitimate; a file named conhost.exe is not automatically genuine. Malware can use a familiar filename, so check the actual executable path, the process context, and the file’s digital signature. A Windows system-directory location and a valid Microsoft signature are useful positive indicators, but neither one alone establishes that the computer is free of malware.

Inspect the process context
Microsoft’s Process Explorer can show active processes, owning accounts, open handles, and loaded DLLs. Use it to inspect the relevant conhost.exe instance and identify related process activity rather than judging it by its name alone.
Check the file and its signature
Check the executable’s location and signing details using file properties or Microsoft’s Sigcheck, which reports file version and digital-signature information, including certificate chains. An unexpected location or an invalid or unexpected signature warrants further investigation; it is not, by itself, a complete diagnosis.

Scan if there are other signs of infection
If the process looks suspicious or there are independent signs of infection, run an up-to-date security scan. Microsoft Defender Offline scans from a trusted environment outside the normal Windows kernel. Microsoft documents it for Windows 10 version 1607 or newer and Windows 11, with platform limitations; check the current Microsoft Defender Offline documentation for your device’s architecture and edition.

A console host may be active while supporting console work. Multiple instances can correspond to multiple console sessions. If one instance stays busy, treat that as a symptom to trace to the console application using it—not as proof that conhost.exe is the root cause or that the file is malicious.

Microsoft’s documentation does not establish a universal normal CPU percentage for conhost.exe or a single cause for every high-CPU report. Process Explorer can help you inspect the relevant instance and its process context, but identifying the application’s own behavior may require investigating that application separately.

How to investigate a busy conhost.exe instance
- Check whether the activity is sustained. In Task Manager, note which conhost.exe instance is active and whether its CPU use continues rather than appearing briefly.
- Inspect its process context. Open the instance in Process Explorer and examine related process activity and loaded components to help identify the console application involved.
- Verify the executable. Check its path and signature with file properties or Sigcheck. Treat unexpected details as reasons to investigate further, not as a verdict by themselves.
- Scan when warranted. If there are additional reasons to suspect malware, run a current security scan and consider Defender Offline if your system supports it.
- Do not delete the file just because CPU use is high. Identify the process and assess the file first; removing a Windows system component is not a reliable way to diagnose the application behind the activity.
