Announced on December 17, 2024, it replaced CASP+ and focuses on security architecture and senior security engineering work. The current exam document identifies the test as CAS-005 V5, with up to 90 questions, a 165-minute limit, and four weighted domains.
What is CompTIA SecurityX?
SecurityX is CompTIA’s expert-level certification for experienced technical cybersecurity practitioners. Its exam is intended to assess the ability to architect, engineer, integrate, and implement secure solutions across complex environments, including cloud, on-premises, and hybrid systems. The objectives also cover automation, monitoring, detection, incident response, cryptography, governance, compliance, risk management, threat modeling, and emerging topics such as AI.
CompTIA describes SecurityX as oriented toward advanced practitioners rather than management-only work. CompTIA cybersecurity product management director Patrick Lane called it “the only hands-on, performance-based certification for advanced practitioners — not managers — at the advanced skill level of cybersecurity.” That “only” is CompTIA’s market-positioning claim, not an independently verified comparison of every certification.
Is SecurityX the same as CASP+?
SecurityX is the successor to CASP+. CompTIA’s December 17, 2024 announcement said the change from CASP+ to SecurityX did not alter the status of people who already held an active CASP+ certification or the continuing education program. That announcement does not establish that every current exam, course, voucher, or credential rule is unchanged; check CompTIA’s current guidance for those details.

What is the CAS-005 exam?
CAS-005 V5 is the exam identified in CompTIA’s SecurityX certification objectives, version 7.0. The exam tests applied technical capabilities using both multiple-choice and performance-based questions.
| Exam detail | What CompTIA lists |
|---|---|
| Exam code and version | CAS-005 V5, in the SecurityX exam objectives document, version 7.0 |
| Question limit | Up to 90 questions |
| Question types | Multiple-choice and performance-based |
| Duration | 165 minutes |
| Result | Pass/fail; no scaled score is reported |
| Accreditation | CompTIA says the exam is accredited by ANAB for compliance with ISO 17024 |
CompTIA says the exam is regularly reviewed and its objectives updated. The objectives also caution that listed examples are not exhaustive and that exam content may change, so use the current official objectives when planning study time.

How much experience do I need for SecurityX?
CompTIA recommends at least 10 years of general hands-on IT experience, including at least 5 years of broad hands-on security experience. The exam document presents this as a recommendation, not a formal prerequisite.
What topics are on the SecurityX exam?
SecurityX has four weighted domains. Security Engineering has the largest share at 31%, followed by Security Architecture at 27%.

| Domain | Exam weight | What it broadly covers |
|---|---|---|
| Governance, Risk, and Compliance | 20% | Risk, compliance, governance, and related security planning |
| Security Architecture | 27% | Secure and resilient system design |
| Security Engineering | 31% | Applied engineering and implementation of security solutions |
| Security Operations | 22% | Monitoring, detection, incident response, and operational security |
CompTIA’s objectives include cryptographic concepts and AI-related security challenges, but they do not state how many questions will address any individual subtopic. Review the official objectives rather than treating the broad domain descriptions as an exhaustive topic list.
Is SecurityX a good fit for your experience?
SecurityX is most relevant to practitioners whose work involves designing or engineering security solutions and who already have substantial hands-on IT and security experience. Before choosing it, consider whether your background and goals line up with the recommended experience and the exam’s technical emphasis.
Rank #4
- Experience: Compare your practical IT and security background with CompTIA’s recommendation; it is guidance, not a stated eligibility rule.
- Role fit: Consider whether security architecture, senior security engineering, integration, or implementation matches the work you want to demonstrate.
- Domain readiness: Compare your strengths and gaps with the four exam weights, especially the 31% Security Engineering domain.
- Exam format: Decide whether you are prepared for a test that combines multiple-choice questions with performance-based items.
The sources establishing SecurityX’s transition from CASP+ and its exam structure do not provide a researched head-to-head comparison with CISSP, CISM, or other certifications. They are not enough to rank or equate those credentials.
How can you prepare for SecurityX?
CompTIA identifies CertMaster Perform and CertMaster Practice as SecurityX preparation resources. In its December 17, 2024 announcement, CompTIA described training materials that include virtual machine labs, challenge labs for each exam domain, demonstration videos, podcast videos with cybersecurity professionals, assessments, and interactive activities. CompTIA also says CertMaster Perform assesses learners at the beginning and throughout the learning process, with attention to knowledge gaps. These are the vendor’s descriptions of its offerings, not independent evidence of learning outcomes or a statement of current package terms.

In its December 17, 2024 announcement, CompTIA attributed historical U.S. workforce figures to CyberSeek: nearly 265,000 additional cybersecurity workers were needed to address staffing needs, and the workforce could fill 83% of available cybersecurity jobs. The release passage does not identify the underlying CyberSeek dataset’s publication date, and these figures should not be read as 2026 estimates.
