Instead of asking for a new, full-length answer every time you want a change, you can select a passage or code block, make direct edits, request focused help, and review earlier versions. It can make drafting and iteration easier, but the evidence does not establish Canvas as a replacement for a full document editor, integrated development environment (IDE), or human review.
What is ChatGPT Canvas?
OpenAI announced Canvas on October 3, 2024, as a separate workspace for writing and coding projects that need more than a simple chat exchange. You and ChatGPT can work on an artifact side by side: you can edit it directly, highlight a specific section for feedback, and use the back button to restore an earlier version. OpenAI says Canvas is intended to help ChatGPT understand the context of the work. OpenAI’s Canvas announcement describes the launch design.
Canvas may open automatically when ChatGPT recognizes a suitable writing or coding task. You can also ask for it explicitly by including “use canvas” in your prompt. The distinction from ordinary chat is mainly the editing workflow: chat is organized around a sequence of messages, while Canvas keeps attention on the text or code being revised.
How Canvas can help with writing
Canvas is designed for drafting, revising, copy-editing, and adapting a document for a different audience. Its writing shortcuts include inline edit suggestions, controls to adjust document length or reading level, a final polish for grammar, clarity, and consistency, and the option to add relevant emojis. Reading-level choices range from Kindergarten to Graduate School, according to OpenAI’s feature description.

Those controls are useful when you have a draft to work on and want to change a specific quality without restarting the conversation. For example, you could select one paragraph and request a clearer explanation, then compare and refine the result in the document. Canvas can assist with editing, but OpenAI’s feature description does not establish that its output is publication-ready without a person checking facts, tone, and accuracy.
How Canvas can help with code
Canvas provides code-focused actions for reviewing code, adding print statements for debugging, inserting comments, fixing bugs, and porting code to JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, or PHP. OpenAI has noted that following revisions in a chat can be difficult; Canvas keeps the code itself available for iterative changes.

OpenAI’s release notes later documented Python code execution in Canvas, along with the ability to ask ChatGPT to attempt bug fixes and explain errors with comments. Execution support is a meaningful addition for trying Python code in the workspace, but the cited release notes do not establish Canvas as a full IDE or document equivalent execution support for every listed language. ChatGPT release notes track these additions.
Canvas, ordinary chat, editors, and IDEs
Canvas changes how you collaborate with ChatGPT; it does not by itself establish that you can dispense with other tools. The practical differences are about what the workspace is built to do:

The table compares Canvas with chat based on OpenAI’s descriptions; it is not a feature-by-feature assessment of specific document editors or IDEs. Canvas is relevant when you want ChatGPT to help revise prose or code in place. Whether it can replace another application depends on requirements—such as document management, collaboration, project tooling, or development features—that the cited Canvas materials do not establish.
What OpenAI’s evaluations say—and what they do not
OpenAI reported that Canvas correctly triggered for writing tasks 83% of the time and for coding tasks 94% of the time, compared with a prompted zero-shot GPT-4o baseline. It also reported that targeted edits performed 18% better than the prompted baseline. These are OpenAI’s own evaluation figures, not independent comparative-study results. The launch article says the team used more than 20 automated internal evaluations and human evaluations for comment quality and accuracy.

In human evaluations, OpenAI reported Canvas comments as 30% more accurate and 16% higher in quality than comments from the prompted zero-shot GPT-4o baseline. These figures describe OpenAI’s evaluations; they do not guarantee a particular result on an individual writing or coding task. OpenAI’s announcement provides the evaluation context.

At its October 2024 launch, Canvas was an early beta built with GPT-4o. OpenAI initially rolled it out globally to Plus and Team users, said Enterprise and Edu access was planned for the following week, and planned Free access after the beta. Later, OpenAI’s release notes documented Canvas in GPT-4o for both Free and paid users, as well as additions including Python execution and Canvas in GPTs and the Toolbox. The release notes provide the later availability update.
