Google’s Chromium development added the Brya mainboard in December 2020 as a foundation for future ChromeOS devices. Retail Chromebooks built from that platform are separate products, with specifications determined by their manufacturers.
What is Brya?
Brya is a reference-board platform in Chromium development for ChromeOS devices based on Intel Alder Lake-P processors. The initial report, published by Chrome Unboxed on December 8, 2020, reproduced the Chromium repository commit: “This commit is a stub for brya, which is a an Intel Alder Lake-P reference platform.” Chrome Unboxed’s report and quoted commit describe a development starting point, not a consumer product announcement.
In Chromebook development, a board codename can serve as a base for multiple device designs. Later coverage identified Brya as the baseboard family for 12th-generation Intel Chromebooks and named derivative boards including Primus and Shadowkeep. A derivative board can lead to a distinct OEM device, so Brya does not define one fixed retail configuration.
Why did Alder Lake matter for Chromebooks?
Alder Lake introduced Intel’s hybrid processor design, pairing larger performance cores (“Cove”) with smaller efficiency cores (“Mont”). The design aimed to balance substantial computing performance with power efficiency for mobile devices. That architecture helps explain why an Alder Lake reference platform was relevant to Chromebook development; it does not establish the speed or battery life of any particular Chromebook.

Is Brya a Chromebook you can buy?
No. Brya is a platform codename rather than a retail Chromebook model. Buyers should look for the name and specifications of an individual manufacturer’s device, including its processor tier, memory, storage, screen, ports, battery, repairability, price, and ChromeOS update policy. Those details can vary among devices associated with the Brya family.
Which Chromebooks use 12th Gen Alder Lake?
Retail examples include the Framework Laptop Chromebook Edition. Phoronix reported that it uses an Intel Core 12th Gen Alder Lake processor and launched at $999 USD. When comparing 12th Gen Alder Lake Chromebooks, compare the actual model configurations rather than assuming every Brya-derived device shares the same hardware. Available details can include processor model and core configuration, memory, NVMe storage, graphics, form factor and display, ports, battery capacity, and repair options.

Brya became a baseboard family from which Chromebook designs could branch. One later development example was Omnigul: a 2023 report said it was based on Brya, was only four days into development when reported, and was preparing NVMe storage. The lineage is useful for understanding how ChromeOS hardware evolves—from reference platform to derivative boards and, potentially, finished OEM devices. It is not enough on its own to identify every retail model or establish a single specification shared across the family. The cited coverage does not provide Chromebook-specific sales, adoption, or measured ChromeOS performance figures for Alder Lake.
