Bluetooth is a short-range wireless technology that lets your iPhone communicate with nearby devices without a cable. It is commonly used for accessories such as headphones, speakers, and keyboards. To connect one, put it in discovery or pairing mode, then select it under Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone.
What is Bluetooth?
Bluetooth is a radio-based standard for short-range communication between devices. On iPhone, it can connect compatible accessories for tasks such as playing audio or typing. You do not need to buy a separate Bluetooth feature for your iPhone; the accessory itself is optional, and its compatibility depends on the product and how it implements Bluetooth.
Bluetooth is not an acronym. The Bluetooth SIG’s historical account traces the name to Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson. In 1996, Intel, Ericsson, and Nokia were discussing a short-range radio standard, and Intel’s Jim Kardach suggested “Bluetooth” as a temporary code name: Harald was associated with uniting Scandinavia, while the technology aimed to unite computing and cellular industries. The SIG says RadioWire and PAN were among the alternative names considered later. Bluetooth SIG: Origin of the name
Bluetooth Classic vs. Bluetooth Low Energy
Bluetooth includes two radio options with different design goals. Classic is also called Basic Rate/Enhanced Data Rate (BR/EDR), while Low Energy (LE) is designed to use very low power. Neither label alone guarantees a particular feature; the accessory must support the relevant functionality and work with your iPhone.

Keep the iPhone close while pairing. Apple gives about 33 feet (10 meters) as an approximate pairing distance, not a guarantee for every accessory or setting. Apple also cautions that not all iOS or iPadOS accessories are fully compatible with iPhone. Apple: Connect iPhone to Bluetooth accessories

How far does Bluetooth reach?
There is no single real-world distance that applies to every Bluetooth connection. Apple’s approximate 33-foot (10-meter) figure is practical iPhone pairing guidance. The Bluetooth SIG says reliable effective range can vary from less than a meter to more than a kilometer depending on design and conditions; that broad span describes possible implementations, not the expected range of a typical phone accessory.
Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz band. Range and data rate involve trade-offs, and factors such as radio type (PHY), receiver sensitivity, and transmit power affect the connection. For everyday use, expect range to vary with the accessory and surroundings rather than relying on a maximum figure. Bluetooth SIG: Understanding Bluetooth Range

Why won’t my Bluetooth device connect?
If an accessory does not connect, work through these checks:
- Move it closer. Keep the iPhone and accessory nearby while connecting.
- Check discovery mode. For a new connection, put the accessory in discovery or pairing mode using its manual.
- Restart and charge the accessory. Turn it off and on, and make sure it has power.
- Check app permission. If the accessory is used through an app, allow Bluetooth access for that app in Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth.
- Pair again. If it was paired before, unpair it, return it to discovery mode, and try pairing again.
- Disconnect it elsewhere. If it is paired to another device, unpair it there and retry with the iPhone.
- Verify compatibility. Ask the accessory maker whether it supports your iPhone and iOS version.
Contact Apple Support if Bluetooth will not turn on, no accessories connect, or the manufacturer confirms the accessory works with your iPhone. Apple: If a Bluetooth accessory won’t connect to your iPhone or iPad

Is a Bluetooth connection secure?
Security depends on the accessory, its implementation, and the pairing mode. Apple distinguishes pairing, which creates shared secret keys, from bonding, which stores keys for future trusted connections. Its security guide describes authentication, encryption, and message-integrity mechanisms for Classic and LE, but those mechanisms do not mean every connection is equally secure in every configuration.
