It supports device discovery and data exchange, as well as broadcast, mesh networking and positioning. It exists alongside Bluetooth Classic (BR/EDR); it did not replace it.
What does Bluetooth Low Energy mean?
Bluetooth Low Energy means Bluetooth LE: one of the two radio options in Bluetooth technology. The Bluetooth SIG describes its purpose directly: “The Bluetooth LE radio is designed for very low power operation.” BLE is not a separate competing brand or simply a setting that every Bluetooth Classic device can use; support depends on the device’s design and implementation.
“Low energy” describes the radio option’s design goal, not a guaranteed battery life. Runtime depends on factors such as device design, radio settings, activity and implementation.
How is Bluetooth LE different from Bluetooth Classic?
Bluetooth LE and Bluetooth Classic (BR/EDR) both operate in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz ISM band, but they are distinct radio options suited to different communication needs. The Bluetooth SIG’s technology overview lists 40 channels for LE and 79 for BR/EDR.
#1 Best Overall
| Comparison | Bluetooth LE | Bluetooth Classic (BR/EDR) |
|---|---|---|
| Design and common uses | Designed for very low-power operation; supports point-to-point communication, broadcast, mesh networking and device positioning. Bluetooth SIG, Bluetooth Technology Overview. | Commonly used for point-to-point wireless audio streaming and some data-transfer applications. Bluetooth SIG, Bluetooth Technology Overview. |
| Channels in the 2.4 GHz ISM band | 40. Bluetooth SIG, Bluetooth Technology Overview. | 79. Bluetooth SIG, Bluetooth Technology Overview. |
| Data model mentioned here | GATT organizes device data into services and characteristics. Bluetooth SIG, GATT Specification. | Not stated in the cited overview. |
Neither option is universally better. The appropriate choice depends on the application’s power needs, communication pattern and required Bluetooth behavior. Do not assume that a product bearing the Bluetooth name uses both radio options.
How Bluetooth LE communication works
Advertising and scanning enable discovery
A Bluetooth LE device can advertise information for other devices to discover by scanning. GAP, the Generic Access Profile, defines discovery and connection procedures and covers advertising and other connectionless communication.

Connections and GATT organize data exchange
Devices may establish a connection to exchange data. GATT, the Generic Attribute Profile, defines higher-level data types and procedures on top of the Attribute Protocol (ATT). A GATT service groups related capabilities; its characteristics represent individual items of device data or state. The precise interaction depends on the devices and software involved.
Bluetooth LE channels, speed and history
Bluetooth LE operates in the 2.4 GHz unlicensed ISM band and first appeared in Bluetooth Core 4.0 as an alternative alongside BR/EDR. The Bluetooth SIG’s Core Specification architecture describes the mandatory LE 1M physical layer (PHY) at 1 megasymbol per second, corresponding to a PHY bit rate of 1 megabit per second. It also describes coded PHY options of 500 kilobits per second (S=2) and 125 kilobits per second (S=8).

- Power-use design: LE is designed for very low-power operation, but check device-specific information for actual consumption or runtime.
- Communication pattern: LE supports point-to-point communication, broadcast and mesh networking; the SIG also identifies device positioning as a use.
- Application behavior: Determine whether the application needs LE’s GATT services and characteristics or BR/EDR behavior commonly associated with point-to-point audio streaming.
- Device support: Confirm that the specific device and software implement the radio option and features the application requires.
