Bionic Reading is a text format that bolds the opening letters of words while leaving the rest in regular type. You can try it through the official Bionic Reading app or web reader, but current studies do not establish that it generally improves reading speed or comprehension. It is a display option to test for yourself—not a proven treatment for dyslexia or ADHD.

What is Bionic Reading?

Bionic Reading changes how text looks by applying bold styling to the first part of words. Its developer describes those bold portions as visual fixation points that guide the eye, with the brain completing familiar words. That is the developer’s explanation for the design, not an established neurological mechanism or proof that the format improves reading.

The format is distinct from ordinary font, spacing, or background adjustments: it emphasizes part of each word. It is also different from text-to-speech tools, which read text aloud and may highlight it as they go.

Does Bionic Reading actually work?

The studies described below do not establish a general reading-speed or comprehension benefit. They tested particular groups and conditions, so their findings should not be treated as proof that the format can never suit an individual reader.

2024 study: no significant reading-time difference

In a July 2024 paper in Acta Psychologica, Joshua Snell tested 32 native Dutch-speaking university students without dyslexia. Participants read 100 short paragraphs in Bionic and normal formats. Reading time did not differ significantly. Snell wrote: “The present results do not provide evidence that Bionic Reading is helpful.” The study’s language, participant group, task, and outcome limit how widely its results can be generalized; it does not settle effects for readers with dyslexia or ADHD, or every measure of comprehension. Read Snell’s study.

2025 study: longer reading time in tested conditions

A study by Klementina Možina, Dorotea Kovačević, and Barbara Blaznik, first published in SAGE Open on December 17, 2025, examined reading on screens and paper using Georgia and Verdana typefaces. It included 59 young adults and 55 middle-aged adults and used six reading texts. In the tested conditions, the authors reported longer reading time in Bionic format and no advantage for print. Comprehension and memorization results did not move consistently. These figures describe the study sample and materials, not population statistics or proof of effectiveness. What to take from the evidence

Vendor explanations, testimonials, and promotional figures are not substitutes for controlled evidence. The studies above are limited in scope and do not justify a broad promise of faster reading, better comprehension, or a clinical benefit. If the appearance interests you, it is reasonable to try it as a personal display preference while keeping those limits in mind.

How to enable Bionic Reading

The official Bionic Reading listing describes apps for iOS, macOS, Android, Windows, Chrome, and the web. It lists a free Discover option as well as Premium and Premium Plus subscriptions. The vendor describes features for converting text, websites, and files—including EPUB, DOCX, RTF, and TXT—adjusting display settings, exporting documents, and sending converted content to Kindle. Availability, supported formats, and subscription terms can change, so check the current official listing for your platform before relying on a feature. Check the official Bionic Reading listing.

  1. Open the official app or web reader. Choose the version listed for your platform, and confirm its current availability and terms.
  2. Add the text you want to read. Paste text or, if supported by your version, provide a website or upload a compatible file.
  3. Adjust the display. Use the available settings to change the presentation to your preference.
  4. Read and assess comfort. Decide whether the format feels useful or distracting; do not assume it will make you faster or improve understanding.

For a simple personal comparison, read similar passages in regular and Bionic formats under the same conditions—for example, on the same device, at the same size, and without changing other display settings. This can help you judge your preference, but it is an individual trial, not a controlled test of efficacy.
