Animation creates the appearance of movement by changing images, objects, or digital elements over time. It includes drawn films, puppets and clay brought to life frame by frame, and computer-generated imagery—not just cartoons or 3D effects. The best way to understand its different forms is to look at what is being changed and how the motion is made.

What is animation?

Animation is a time-based visual process: an artist changes an image or object across successive moments so that the changes read as movement. The UCLA Film & Television Archive describes it this way: “Animation encompasses a wide range of frame-by-frame, two- and three- dimensional filmmaking techniques.” The medium can tell a story, explain an idea, or create abstract motion; it is not defined by one look or subject.

That definition is broad by design. A drawn character, a photographed puppet, and a digital model can all be animated, even though they require different materials and production methods.

What are the different types of animation?

There is no single definitive list of animation types. Some overviews separate techniques such as clay animation and puppet animation; others group them under stop motion or another production method. The comparison below groups them by what the animator changes, drawing on examples listed by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and distinctions discussed by Vancouver Film School.

Approach What is manipulated What that means in practice
Drawn 2D animation Drawings, traditionally made on paper or acetate, or created digitally. The animator creates changing images, often frame by frame. Drawing and visual planning are central skills in many 2D workflows.
Cutout animation Flat cutout shapes or figures. Motion comes from changing the position or arrangement of the cutouts. This is a distinct material approach, even when the finished work resembles drawn animation.
Stop motion Physical puppets, clay, models, or other objects. The objects are changed between captured images. The physical setup and camera are part of the method; the exact materials depend on the project.
Computer-generated animation (CGI) Digital elements, including models in 3D animation. Movement is authored digitally. The work may involve keyframed states, though digital techniques and workflows are not all identical.
Other frame-by-frame techniques Methods such as pin-screen animation, photokinesis, or pixilation. These are additional techniques identified by the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Their names describe methods, not a single visual style or purpose.

Technique and style are related but not interchangeable. A technique describes how motion is produced; a style describes how the finished work looks and feels. A style can be pursued with different production methods, and the name of a technique alone does not tell you what a film will look like.

How does animation work?

At its simplest, an animator plans an action, decides how it should change over time, then creates or manipulates the visual states that make the action readable. The particular steps depend on the technique; a physical puppet setup is not the same workflow as a digital character or a hand-drawn sequence.

Several ideas recur in animation education, although no one sequence applies to every project:

  • Storyboarding: planning the action or sequence visually before producing all of its moving elements.
  • Keyframes and frame-by-frame work: two ways of organizing changes over time. A workflow may use one, the other, or a combination, depending on the method.
  • Composition: arranging visual elements within the image.
  • Pacing: controlling when actions happen and how long they take, so the motion is understandable and has the intended effect.
  • Export: preparing the finished work for its intended delivery format.

These are useful topics to learn, not a universal production checklist. Borough of Manhattan Community College’s animation resource treats storyboarding, keyframes, frame-by-frame animation, composition, pacing, and exporting as distinct skills and concepts. The tools and order vary with the technique and intended output.

Animation production can also bring artistic and technical work together. Disney Animation describes its production technology work as collaboration between artists and technologists, and says it shares open-source software and datasets. That describes the studio’s work; it does not establish that a particular studio tool is the right choice for a beginner.

Do you need to know how to draw to animate?

No single answer applies to every kind of animation. Drawing is central to many traditional and 2D disciplines, and it can help with planning, posing, and communicating visual ideas. But animation also includes methods that do not start with drawing every image.

  • For drawn 2D work: drawing is often a core production skill.
  • For 3D work: the skills depend on the role and workflow; prepared digital characters can be animated without drawing each frame.
  • For stop motion: working with physical objects, puppets, or models is central to the method.
  • For typography-driven motion design: arranging and animating type uses a different mix of skills from character drawing.

Vancouver Film School notes that drawing is useful for planning, posing, and visual communication, while these different disciplines call for different skill mixes. Instead of asking whether drawing is required for animation as a whole, ask what skills the particular type of animation you want to make requires.

How do you choose an animation style or software to start with?

Choose the production method before choosing an application. First decide what you want to animate and what you can work with: drawings, flat shapes, physical objects, or digital elements. Then consider the look you want, the skills you want to practise, and the format in which you plan to share the result.

  1. Name the project: for example, a drawn character action, a moving title, or a short sequence using a physical object.
  2. Choose a method that fits it: the methods differ in what you manipulate and what practical setup they need.
  3. Check the workflow: find out whether the method uses frame-by-frame changes, keyframes, a camera and physical setup, or another technique-specific process.
  4. Match the tool to the task: check that the application supports the chosen method and the output format you need.
  5. Start with a small action: a short test lets you practise timing and changing visual states before committing to a larger piece.

There is no universally best animation application or device established across these different workflows. A tool suited to digital drawing may not be necessary for stop motion or typography-led work. Recommendations only make sense when the method, intended output, platform, and current software details are specified.

How wide is the medium?

Animation’s range includes both technical approaches and works made for different purposes. One current museum example is MoMA’s It’s Alive! A Century of Animation from the Collection, which opened August 1, 2026, and is scheduled to run through summer 2027. MoMA describes it as bringing together more than 200 pieces of production art and films by more than 35 artists and filmmakers, with works created from 1908 to 2020. Those figures describe this exhibition, not the size of the animation industry.
