Android Recovery Mode is a startup menu that can offer recovery actions when your phone’s normal Android interface is unavailable. The entry buttons and menu options vary by make and model, so use the instructions for your exact device. Most importantly, “Wipe data/factory reset” erases data on the phone; try less destructive fixes first and prepare before choosing it.

What is Android recovery mode?

Recovery Mode is a built-in menu reached during startup rather than through the usual Android interface. Depending on the phone, it can let you restart the device or perform other recovery actions. The options and button controls are not identical on every Android phone.

Android also checks at startup whether the operating system comes from a trusted source and has not been changed or corrupted. Google warns that intentionally changed system software may not work properly and can create data-corruption and security risks. If your phone displays an unexpected warning about altered software, contact the device maker’s support rather than trying unofficial firmware or bypasses. Google’s Android safety guidance explains these warnings.

How do I enter recovery mode on Android?

There is no universal button combination. Check the manufacturer’s current instructions for your exact model before trying to enter Recovery Mode; button sequences can differ even among phones from the same maker.

As one general example, Android.com’s reset guide describes turning the phone off, holding Volume Down and Power for about 10–15 seconds, then selecting Recovery Mode in the boot menu. If a “No command” screen appears, that guide describes using Power and Volume Up to reveal the options. These are example steps, not instructions for every device. Motorola documents a similar procedure for its described phone, while Samsung says the combination varies by device.

  1. Look up the recovery-entry procedure for your phone’s exact make and model.
  2. Turn the phone fully off, then follow that model’s button instructions. On some phones, the combination opens a boot menu where you select Recovery Mode.
  3. If you see “No command,” follow the model-specific instructions for revealing the recovery menu; do not assume another device’s button sequence will work.

How do I use the Recovery Mode menu?

Follow the instructions shown for your device. In Android.com’s example, the volume buttons move through menu items and Power selects one. Some devices use different controls or show different options, so select only an item you understand.

If the menu offers “Reboot system now,” selecting it restarts the phone without choosing the data-wipe action. It is the clearest non-reset exit option in Android.com’s example. Motorola’s guide also documents that option and, for its described device, says to hold Power until the screen goes dark if the phone does not finish rebooting, then release it and allow the phone to power up. That fallback is device-specific; check your own manufacturer’s instructions if the restart fails.

Will recovery mode erase everything?

Entering Recovery Mode does not itself mean your data will be erased. The menu may include options with different effects. Choosing “Wipe data/factory reset” and confirming it erases phone data; do not select it unless you intend to reset the device. Google says data saved in your Google Account may be restored, but apps and their app data are uninstalled. Google’s factory-reset guidance recommends trying other solutions first when you are resetting to fix a problem.

Prepare before a factory reset

Do not start a reset until you have considered the data loss and can complete setup afterward. Google recommends these preparations:

  • Back up any data you want to keep.
  • Make sure you know the Google Account username and password associated with the phone, as well as the screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password.
  • Charge the phone to at least 70%.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile service; you will need to sign in after the reset.
  • If you recently changed your Google Account password, Google advises waiting 24 hours before resetting.

Google says a factory reset can take up to an hour. In the recovery menu, the destructive path is an explicit selection of “Wipe data/factory reset” followed by confirmation. Read each prompt carefully and stop if the wording or expected result is unclear.

What should I try before using Recovery Mode to fix a phone?

A frozen or blank screen can result from power, display, software, or app problems. If the phone still responds to its normal controls, start with ordinary troubleshooting rather than a reset. Google recommends trying other fixes first. Its troubleshooting guide for a phone that freezes or will not respond suggests holding Power for about 30 seconds to restart, then checking for system updates, available storage, and app problems.

Google notes that a phone may begin having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free. This is a troubleshooting threshold in Google’s support guidance, not a statistic about how often phones fail. If the display works and you can open Settings, checking storage and removing unneeded files or apps may be a less destructive step than resetting.

Option When it may help Does it erase phone data? What to keep in mind
Restart and ordinary troubleshooting The phone responds, or it may be frozen temporarily. No deliberate data wipe. Try a restart, updates, storage checks, and app troubleshooting before a factory reset, as Google recommends.
Recovery Mode: “Reboot system now” You can reach the recovery menu and want to restart without selecting the reset option. It is not the menu’s data-wipe action. Menu wording and controls vary; follow the instructions for your phone.
Recovery Mode: “Wipe data/factory reset” Other fixes have not solved the problem and you are prepared to erase the phone. Yes. Back up first and confirm account and screen-lock credentials; follow the exact model’s instructions.

What if the phone will not turn on, charge, or leave Recovery Mode?

If the phone will not turn on or charge, first check whether the problem is power-related or whether the display may simply be blank. Google’s power and charging troubleshooting guide recommends checking the power button, charger and cable, outlet, and charging port. Its advanced hardware-button troubleshooting is for power problems; it should not be treated as a universal Recovery Mode entry method.

If the phone remains stuck, the menu differs from the instructions you found, or the issue began after a system change, contact the manufacturer or carrier for model-specific help. Android recovery procedures vary, and a device maker can provide the relevant steps for that phone.
