An iPhone flash drive is a portable external storage device that connects to an iPhone through a compatible Lightning or USB-C port, sometimes using an adapter. It lets you access or copy files on the drive; it does not add to the iPhone’s built-in storage.
What an iPhone flash drive does
It works like a small external drive for files you want to move or access between a compatible iPhone and other devices. Depending on the drive and software, you may be able to copy photos, videos, documents, and other supported files to or from the iPhone.
Apple says that the Files app and other supported apps can access files stored on external devices connected to an iPhone. A drive is not automatically a full-device backup: its contents and the transfer steps depend on the apps and drive you use. Apple’s external storage instructions explain the supported access route.
How it connects to an iPhone
Check the connector on your exact iPhone model before choosing a drive. Some drives connect through Lightning; others use USB-C. A connector adapter may be needed, but a physical fit alone does not guarantee that the drive or its companion software will work with your phone.

For Lightning iPhones, Apple identifies the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter and Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter as possible ways to connect external storage. USB-C iPhones need a compatible USB-C connection or supported adapter. SanDisk, for example, markets Phone Drive versions with Lightning and USB-C connectors; verify compatibility for the specific phone and product model. SanDisk Phone Drive product information describes its own variants, not universal compatibility.
How to find a connected drive in Files
- Connect the USB drive or card reader to the iPhone’s charging port, directly or through a compatible adapter.
- Open the Files app and tap Browse.
- Look under Locations and tap the external drive to view its files.
If the drive does not appear, check its connector and adapter, file format, partitioning, and power needs. Some manufacturers also provide companion apps, and the available workflow varies by drive model, connection, and software version. SanDisk’s support information describes app-specific workflows for its products. SanDisk iXpand support is specific to that product family.

Format, partition, and power requirements
Apple says an external storage device must have a single data partition. Its supported formats are APFS, encrypted APFS, macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT (FAT64), FAT32, and FAT. An incompatible format or multiple data partitions can prevent recognition.
Power is another possible constraint. Many compact flash drives are self-powered, but external hard drives often require their own power source. For USB-C iPhones, Apple identifies a powered USB hub as an option. For Lightning iPhones, it identifies the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter connected to a USB power adapter. These are conditional solutions, not requirements for every flash drive.

What to check before choosing one
- iPhone model and port: Confirm whether your iPhone uses Lightning or USB-C and check the drive’s compatibility details.
- Access method: Determine whether the drive appears in Files or requires a manufacturer app for some tasks.
- Capacity and other connector: Choose capacity for the files you intend to move, and check that the connector for your Mac or PC fits. Older product specifications describe those models only; they do not establish current availability.
- Format, partition, and power: Confirm Apple-supported formatting and a single data partition; check whether the device needs external power.
A suitable iPhone-compatible USB flash drive can be convenient for file transfer, but compatibility is specific to the iPhone, drive, connection, and software. Apple’s guide to connecting external storage covers supported formats and adapters.
