An IDE host adapter is the computer-side interface that lets the system communicate with IDE/ATA storage, such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive. It may be built into the motherboard or supplied by a separate expansion card. The term describes the host’s connection to the drive—not necessarily a separate controller card.
What does an IDE host adapter do?
The adapter connects the computer’s system bus to an IDE device and provides the interface signals or registers the host processor and software use to access it. In one documented CD-ROM design, for example, the processor checks adapter status and reads or writes data through an adapter buffer. IDE stands for Integrated Drive Electronics. In the common arrangement, drive-side electronics are integrated into the drive; the host adapter handles the computer-side interface. Is an IDE host adapter the same as an IDE controller?
The terms are often used loosely for the host-side IDE interface, but “host adapter” does not mean that every IDE drive needs a separate intelligent controller card. The adapter may be circuitry on the motherboard, or it may be an add-in card. The drive’s integrated electronics and the host’s bus interface are different parts of the arrangement.

Where is the adapter located?
- On the motherboard: Many PCs have IDE/ATA interface circuitry integrated into the baseboard.
- On an expansion card: A separate card can provide an IDE interface when the system lacks one or needs a particular capability. For example, Kontron documents primary and secondary IDE host adapters implemented as PCI bus devices and configured through BIOS. Kontron legacy user guide
What affects compatibility and transfer modes?
“IDE host adapter” identifies a role, not one guaranteed speed, connector, or feature set. Supported transfer modes depend on the specific adapter and platform, and can be constrained by the motherboard layout, cabling, and attached peripherals. Kontron’s manual describes capabilities for its own platform; those ratings should not be read as universal IDE limits.
Before using a replacement card or converter, check the physical connector and cable, the direction of any interface conversion, the number of supported channels or devices, and whether the BIOS and operating system support the hardware. A product described as SATA-to-IDE is not automatically suitable for every IDE-to-SATA setup. Lycom conversion product page

How does this relate to SATA?
Parallel IDE (also called PATA) and SATA use different physical interfaces. However, some SATA controllers can expose a register interface equivalent to a traditional IDE host adapter in legacy-compatible modes.
