An HD video format is a high-definition picture format defined by its image dimensions and scan method, usually with a frame or field rate. In common television usage, HD means at least 720 vertical lines and typically a 16:9 picture. The familiar examples are 1280×720 progressive (720p) and 1920×1080, which can be interlaced (1080i) or progressive (1080p).

HD is a family of formats, not a codec, file type or guarantee of picture quality.

What does an HD video format mean?

The format describes how the picture is arranged and scanned. Its label commonly combines a vertical line count, a scan designation and a rate, as in 1080p59.94. The conventional HD category and its common dimensions are described by IEEE Technology Navigator; HDTV parameters are associated with ITU-R BT.709.

Common labels give a useful shorthand, but they do not describe every technical property of a video stream. Standards nomenclature also includes production cases with different raster widths, so a line-count label should not be treated as a complete specification.

What do 720p, 1080i and 1080p mean?

The number refers to the picture’s vertical line count. The letter tells you how those lines are scanned:

  • p means progressive: each frame is scanned as a whole.
  • i means interlaced: the picture is transmitted or displayed in fields rather than as a sequence of complete progressively scanned frames.
Label Common raster example Scan method Rate examples
720p 1280×720 Progressive 23.98/24, 25, 29.97/30, 50 and 59.94/60-family variants
1080i 1920×1080 Interlaced 50 Hz or 59.94 Hz field frequency; nominal frame-rate labels include 25 and 30, respectively
1080p 1920×1080 Progressive 23.98/24, 25, 29.97/30, 50 and 59.94/60-family variants

These are common examples, not a full list of allowed rasters, sampling structures or interface mappings. The SMPTE HDTV and 2K D-Cinema production nomenclature chart also shows 2048-pixel-wide production cases with 1080 lines.

How should you read the rate?

The rate is often appended to the format label: for example, 720p50, 1080i50 or 1080p59.94. For progressive video, the rate describes frames per second. For interlaced video, distinguish field frequency from frame frequency: SMPTE RP 2027:2012 lists 1080i at 50 Hz and 59.94 Hz field frequency, while nominal frame-rate labels are 25 and 30.

Values such as 23.98 and 24, or 29.97 and 30, are related but not identical. The appropriate variant depends on the source and the production, broadcast or delivery system. SMPTE RP 2027:2012 provides examples of 720p and 1080p production rates; it is a technical reference, not a claim that these are the only current options.

Is 1080i HD?

Yes. 1080i is a common HD format: it has 1080 vertical lines and uses interlaced scanning. The “i” does not mean that it falls outside HD; it identifies how the image is scanned. When comparing it with a progressive format, account for the source material, field or frame rate, display processing and intended delivery workflow rather than judging by the number alone.

What is the difference between 720p and 1080p?

Both are progressive formats, but their common raster examples differ: 720p is 1280×720, while 1080p is 1920×1080. Those dimensions describe the raster, not the complete viewing result. Source quality, bitrate, codec, display and delivery conditions also affect the picture, so the labels alone do not establish that one will always look better or be the right choice for every workflow.

What HD does not specify

HD describes a resolution and signal-format class in common television usage. It does not, on its own, tell you:

  • which video codec is used, such as H.264;
  • the file container or transport protocol;
  • the bitrate or compression level;
  • the color depth, chroma subsampling or HDR mode;
  • whether the picture originated in HD or was upscaled; or
  • how good the image will look on a particular screen.

These are separate layers of a video system. For example, ITU-T H.222.0 v10 (04/2025) covers multiplexing video, audio and related data, and supports multiple video-coding specifications and DASH. It concerns stream systems and delivery, not a consumer definition of HD.

How to compare HD formats for a video

Use the full format label and the intended use rather than treating “HD” as a quality score. Compare:

  • Raster: the actual pixel dimensions, not just the vertical-line label.
  • Scan method: progressive frames versus interlaced fields.
  • Rate: including whether an interlaced rate refers to fields or frames, and whether it is a fractional or integer variant.
  • Source: whether the material was recorded in that format or converted or upscaled.
  • Workflow: the requirements of the production, broadcast, delivery system and playback display.

Standards such as the ITU-R BT.709 recommendation provide technical parameters for HDTV, while production charts and system-layer specifications describe other pieces of the signal chain. A format label is useful, but it is not a substitute for the full specification when engineering a production or delivery path.
