An AI detection tool analyzes content for patterns associated with AI generation and estimates whether AI may have contributed. For text, that estimate is not proof of authorship: it does not identify a writer or establish that a person used AI. A score should be treated as one uncertain signal, not a verdict.
How does an AI text detector work?
Text detectors look at linguistic and structural patterns—such as perplexity, burstiness, and sentence structure—and compare them with patterns represented in their training or evaluation data. They generally do not find a unique machine “signature” that conclusively identifies who wrote a passage.
OpenAI described its experimental classifier as a language model fine-tuned on paired examples of human-written and AI-written text. More broadly, detector results depend on the particular detector, the generators it encounters, and the data and methods used to evaluate it. NIST’s 2024 GenAI Pilot Study found substantial variation: some generators deceived most discriminators, while some discriminators detected content from almost all generators. The study overview discusses AUC and Brier scores but does not give one accuracy percentage that applies to AI detectors as a whole. NIST’s 2024 GenAI Pilot Study
Detection is different from text matching
A text-matching system searches for passages that correspond to existing, verifiable sources. An AI detector instead estimates likely origin from patterns in the submitted text. Generated text may not exist in a source database to match, and a detector’s estimate is not equivalent to a match or a verified source.

What does an AI detector score mean?
A score indicates how the tool classified the text under its own method; it is not automatically the probability that the specific document was AI-generated. Nor does it establish which person wrote the text. A high score can be mistaken for a document-level probability even when it is not one.
In 2023, OpenAI reported that its experimental classifier correctly identified 26% of AI-written text as “likely AI-written” on its English challenge set, while incorrectly labeling 9% of human-written text as AI-written. Those results apply to that model and challenge set, not to current detectors as a class. OpenAI said the classifier was very unreliable on texts under 1,000 characters, performed significantly worse in languages other than English, was unreliable on code, and could be evaded by editing. Reliability typically improved with longer input. OpenAI’s 2023 classifier announcement

These two types of error matter in different ways:
- False positive: human-written text is labeled as AI-written.
- False negative: AI-generated text is not identified.
Why can detector results be unreliable?
Performance can change with the detector and generator, text length, language, subject area, editing, and whether human and AI-produced writing are mixed. A detector that performs well on one kind of sample may not perform similarly on a short, edited, multilingual, or mixed-authorship passage.
TEQSA, Australia’s Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency, notes that tools are less reliable on edited or mixed text and short documents, such as those under 300 words; it also warns that humanization add-ons may bypass detectors. OpenAI’s 2023 findings on short inputs, languages other than English, code, and editing apply to its experimental classifier rather than all products. TEQSA’s guidance on assessment and generative AI

Should a detector score be used as proof of misconduct?
No. A detector score alone is not sufficient evidence to establish authorship or misconduct. OpenAI said its classifier “should not be used as a primary decision-making tool, but instead as a complement to other methods of determining the source of a piece of text.” TEQSA likewise states: “The ‘AI score’ alone is insufficient to bring an allegation of misconduct.”
Institutional approaches differ. The University of Oxford’s AI Competency Centre says Oxford does not endorse digital AI detectors for academic decision-making, citing the probabilistic nature of outputs and the difficulty of verifying them against ground truth in ordinary student work. TEQSA advises gathering evidence beyond a score and considering evidence that could disconfirm a suspicion as well as evidence that might support it. Its guidance recommends process-oriented evidence, such as version history and records of the writing process, as part of assessment security.
