An 11-pin-to-5-pin adapter connects one specific 11-contact connector to one specific 5-contact connector—but the phrase alone does not identify the device, wiring, or purpose. It can refer to a Samsung Micro-USB/MHL adapter for a phone-to-display connection or to a Western/Fisher/SnowEx snowplow-light harness. These are unrelated products and are not interchangeable.
What does “11-pin to 5-pin adapter” mean?
It describes a connector-count change, not a universal standard or a complete wiring specification. Pin count alone does not establish which devices will work together, how the contacts are mapped, or whether the connector ends have the right gender and shape.
Two documented products illustrate the ambiguity: StarTech’s S3MHADAP for a Samsung MHL setup and Buyers Products’ SAM model 1311820 for plow lights. Include the device family or purpose when searching, such as “Samsung MHL” or “plow light.”
Samsung Micro-USB/MHL adapter
StarTech’s S3MHADAP adapts an 11-pin Samsung connector to a standard 5-pin Micro-USB connection for specified Samsung devices to connect to an MHL-enabled display through a 5-pin MHL cable or adapter. The datasheet identifies a Micro-USB-B 5-pin female end and an MHL 11-pin male end. It names the Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, and Note 2 as examples of supported devices. The adapter’s name can be read as a direction of conversion, but its connector-end description is more precise for checking fit: compare the device port and the accessory plug with the documented male and female ends. The listed MHL application does not establish compatibility with every 11-pin phone or 5-pin accessory.
Western/Fisher/SnowEx plow-light harness
Buyers Products lists SAM model 1311820 as a Western/Fisher 11-pin-to-5-pin plow-light adapter harness. It belongs to a SAM plug-and-play adapter family for aftermarket plow lights. The manufacturer’s page names compatible lamp models; a seller identifies the harness ends as a Western/Fisher/SnowEx overmolded 11-pin connector and a SAM 5-pin GT150. How to identify the adapter you need
- Identify the equipment and job. Determine whether this is a Samsung MHL display connection, a plow-light installation, or another system; do not choose by pin count alone.
- Check both connector ends. Match the physical connector type and gender at each end to the device port and the accessory plug.
- Find the exact part number. For the documented examples, S3MHADAP is the Samsung MHL adapter and SAM 1311820 is the Western/Fisher plow-light harness.
- Confirm documented compatibility. For MHL, check support across the phone, adapter, downstream cable, and display path. For plow lights, match the harness family and lamp model against the manufacturer’s compatibility information.
- Do not infer wiring from the label. Confirm the product’s pinout or compatibility documentation for the exact application. The reviewed product sources do not provide a universal wiring diagram covering both systems.
What the pin count does—and does not—tell you
- It tells you: the connectors are described as having 11 and 5 contacts.
- It does not tell you: the device family, connector gender, electrical pin mapping, supported function, or whether two products are compatible.
