AMD Advantage is a design framework for gaming laptops, not a single chip or feature. It brings together AMD Ryzen mobile processors, Radeon laptop graphics, AMD software, selected AMD Smart technologies, and system-design characteristics intended for gaming. The specific hardware and Smart features vary by laptop configuration and generation.
What AMD Advantage means
AMD introduced the AMD Advantage Design Framework at Computex on May 31, 2021, describing it as a collaboration with PC makers to develop premium gaming laptops. A qualifying system combines AMD components and software with design choices intended to support gaming; the name itself does not identify a particular processor, graphics chip, or guaranteed performance level. AMD summarized its intent through Scott Herkelman, then corporate vice president and general manager of its Graphics Business Unit: “With AMD Advantage, gamers can be sure these next-gen laptops are designed, optimized and purpose-built for the best possible gaming experiences.” That is AMD’s description of the framework’s design goal, not an independent test result. AMD’s 2021 announcement and Computex summary explain the launch and partner context.
The 2021 launch configuration
At launch, AMD described Advantage laptops built around Ryzen 5000 Series mobile processors and Radeon RX 6000M Series graphics, together with Radeon Software, selected Smart technologies, and other system characteristics. Those are the launch-generation parts, not requirements that apply to every later Advantage laptop.
Design characteristics and launch claims
AMD’s 2021 announcement cited design targets or characteristics including displays with refresh rates of 144Hz or higher and brightness above 300 nits, plus “10+ hrs.” of battery-powered video playback. These are AMD’s stated design claims, not specifications guaranteed for every model; the battery figure concerns video playback, not gaming. AMD also advertised up to 1.5X higher performance versus AMD RDNA architecture for its RX 6000M Series claim, with test-method footnotes in the release. Treat it as a vendor claim tied to the release’s test context, not a general Advantage-laptop comparison.

The announcement also positioned the RX 6800M for 1440p/120 FPS performance and the RX 6600M for high-refresh 1080p/100 FPS gaming, subject to the release’s test footnotes and qualifications. These are launch-era GPU claims, not a promise for every game or system. Its “up to 2.5X” claim compared gaming at 4K with native-resolution gaming in select titles using FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR); AMD’s footnote says results vary by FSR quality mode and title support. That figure is an FSR claim, not a blanket result for Advantage laptops. AMD’s announcement contains the associated test notes and conditions.
What the AMD Smart technologies do
“Smart” refers to a family of AMD technologies, not one feature that every Advantage laptop includes. In 2021, AMD specifically highlighted SmartShift and Smart Access Memory. AMD’s current Smart Technologies overview describes a broader set; the features below depend on supported hardware and configuration.
| Technology | What AMD says it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| SmartShift | In the 2021 announcement, dynamically shifted laptop power between a Ryzen mobile processor and Radeon graphics to provide an additional increase in gaming performance. | This describes AMD’s intended behavior, not a measured or guaranteed gain on every laptop. |
| SmartShift Max | Shifts power between Ryzen processors and Radeon graphics. | AMD lists it among technologies that may require OEM or developer enablement and are available only with select configurations. |
| SmartShift Eco | Switches between integrated graphics on battery and Radeon graphics when plugged in. | AMD lists it among technologies that may require OEM or developer enablement and are available only with select configurations. |
| SmartShift RSR | Splits rendering and upscaling tasks. | AMD lists it among technologies that may require OEM or developer enablement and are available only with select configurations. |
| Smart Access Memory | Enables a Ryzen processor to access Radeon graphics memory. In the 2021 description, AMD said this meant access to the full high-speed Radeon GDDR6 graphics memory and could deliver higher performance in select AMD-powered laptops. | AMD’s claim is limited to select laptops; confirm availability for the exact system. |
| SmartAccess Graphics | Selects between a discrete GPU and an APU according to workload. | AMD lists it among technologies that may require OEM or developer enablement and are available only with select configurations. |
| SmartAccess Video | Distributes video encoding and decoding tasks across Ryzen and Radeon hardware. | AMD lists it among technologies that may require OEM or developer enablement and are available only with select configurations. |
These descriptions reflect AMD’s technology overview; they do not establish that each feature appears on all Advantage systems. SmartShift and Smart Access Memory were the technologies called out in the 2021 framework announcement, while the others are part of the broader family AMD describes today.

Why Advantage laptops differ by generation and configuration
The platform has evolved beyond the RX 6000M and Ryzen 5000 launch combination. For example, on October 19, 2023, AMD described the Alienware m18 with Radeon RX 7900M as an AMD Advantage laptop and listed SmartShift Max, SmartAccess Graphics, Smart Access Memory, and SmartAccess Video for that system. This is a later example, not evidence that those features or that model are currently available everywhere. AMD’s 2023 announcement identifies the system and listed technologies.
Feature support can depend on the laptop maker’s implementation. AMD explicitly says SmartAccess Graphics, SmartAccess Video, SmartAccess Storage, SmartShift Eco, SmartShift Max, and SmartShift RSR may require OEM or developer enablement and are available only on select configurations. A platform label alone is therefore not enough to establish which Smart technologies a particular laptop supports.
How to evaluate an AMD Advantage laptop
Compare the full configuration rather than relying on “Advantage” or a model name. OEMs can sell systems under one family name with different components and specifications, and the sources cited here do not independently benchmark laptops.
Quick Recap
- Processor and GPU: Check the exact Ryzen CPU and Radeon GPU, including the graphics power limit and cooling details when the manufacturer publishes them.
- Display: Confirm resolution, refresh rate, and brightness for the exact configuration rather than assuming the 2021 design characteristics apply.
- Memory and storage: Verify the installed capacity and upgrade options in the specific listing or manufacturer specification.
- Battery claims: Look for the stated test use case. Video playback endurance is not gaming endurance, and figures from different test methods are not directly comparable.
- Smart features: Check the manufacturer’s specification or AMD’s supported-configuration information for each feature you care about.
- Performance claims: Identify the GPU, game or workload, resolution, settings, and test conditions behind any FPS or uplift figure.
