AI cloud infrastructure is cloud capacity and software configured for artificial intelligence work—especially model training, fine-tuning, and inference. It often combines accelerated compute such as GPUs with storage, networking, orchestration, and AI software services. Traditional cloud hosting provides general-purpose cloud resources; it can run AI workloads too, but customers may need to select and assemble more of the AI-specific stack themselves.

The difference is one of focus and integration, not a separate rule about where AI can run. An AI cloud may offer anything from GPU virtual machines to managed Kubernetes or a higher-level AI platform, depending on the provider.

What is AI cloud infrastructure?

“AI cloud infrastructure” describes a category of services and architectures, not one standardized product. In plain terms, it can give customers access to compute, software, and operations configured to work together for AI workloads rather than requiring them to build every layer from general-purpose services.

A GPU, or graphics processing unit, is an accelerator commonly used for AI computations. Inference is the process of using a trained model to generate a result, such as a classification, answer, or prediction. Training adjusts a model using data; fine-tuning further adapts an existing model. These workloads can have different compute, data, and operational needs.

NVIDIA’s reference architecture describes three possible service layers: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), including bare-metal servers and virtual machines; Container as a Service (CaaS), including managed Kubernetes; and AI Platform as a Service (PaaS), where tenants access AI workloads at a higher level. Its Requirements for AI Clouds document is version 2.4, updated September 1, 2026. This is one vendor’s architecture, not a universal checklist that every provider follows.

Some offerings provide only infrastructure such as GPU virtual machines or bare metal. Others add managed container orchestration, software images, AI services, or operational support. Resources may be allocated on demand and shared across tenants; how isolation and operations are handled depends on the design.

How does it differ from traditional cloud hosting?

Area AI cloud emphasis Traditional cloud hosting emphasis
Workloads Training, fine-tuning, and inference, including workloads run by multiple tenants. Broad general-purpose applications and compute; AI workloads can also run on these services.
Compute and architecture Accelerated compute coordinated with supporting storage, networking, and software. General-purpose instances and services; customers may need to select or assemble AI-specific configurations.
Service layers May combine IaaS, managed Kubernetes or other CaaS, and AI PaaS. Often consumed as general infrastructure and platform services; exact offerings vary by provider.
Setup and operations May include AI-focused images, managed services, or reference configurations. Customers may need to choose and configure supported images, drivers, containers, and orchestration.
Placement and control Some providers emphasize regional capacity, sovereignty, or operational control. Capabilities depend on the provider, service, and region.

These are differences in service emphasis, not evidence that conventional cloud platforms cannot support AI. NVIDIA’s AI Enterprise deployment guide describes software deployment across major cloud platforms and distinguishes routes such as standard instances, vendor images, managed Kubernetes, and marketplace OpenShift. A standard instance may not arrive with a supported, preconfigured AI software stack, and software licensing can depend on the deployment route.

Can AI run on a regular cloud server?

Yes. AI workloads can run on general cloud platforms, provided the chosen service and configuration meet the workload’s needs. That may mean using a supported accelerator, selecting compatible images and drivers, installing container tooling and frameworks, and arranging data access and networking. A provider’s AI-focused service can reduce the amount of configuration a customer must manage, but the label alone does not establish that a particular workload will perform better or cost less.

For example, NVIDIA’s deployment guide lists AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Alibaba Cloud, and Tencent Cloud as platforms on which NVIDIA AI Enterprise software can run. The available deployment options and licensing terms differ; check the provider’s current documentation for the specific region and service you plan to use.

What should you compare when choosing an AI cloud?

Compare offers for the same workload and level of managed service. A GPU hourly rate alone may omit software, storage, data movement, support, or the cost of capacity that sits idle.

  1. Define the workload. Identify whether you need training, fine-tuning, batch inference, or real-time inference, and estimate the workload’s duration and data needs.
  2. Verify accelerator availability. Check the GPU type, quantity, and capacity in the region you need. Availability can change, so confirm supply directly with the provider.
  3. Choose the service level. Decide whether you need bare metal, virtual machines, managed Kubernetes, or a higher-level AI platform. More management can simplify operations, but may reduce control over the underlying environment.
  4. Check software and licensing. Confirm which operating-system images, drivers, container tools, AI frameworks, and licenses are included. A software image or license may not be included in an instance’s price.
  5. Assess data and networking. Check how the service accesses your data, what storage and network performance it offers, and where data will be located.
  6. Review tenancy and operations. Establish whether capacity is shared or dedicated, how workload isolation works, what reliability commitments apply, and which operational tasks the provider handles.
  7. Compare total cost and utilization. Price the complete service and software stack for the workload and its expected runtime, rather than comparing headline accelerator rates alone.

No neutral price comparison or benchmark establishes that one named provider is universally faster or cheaper. The right choice depends on the workload, service configuration, regional availability, and how much of the stack you want to operate yourself.
