A zero-day exploit takes advantage of a software, hardware, or firmware vulnerability before an official patch or security update is available. The vulnerability is the flaw; the exploit is the action or mechanism that uses it. “Zero-day” can also describe a vulnerability that was previously unknown, and the term does not mean an attack is certain to happen.
What does “zero-day” mean?
Security sources use the term in related but not identical ways. NIST’s glossary defines a zero-day attack as “An attack that exploits a previously unknown hardware, firmware, or software vulnerability” (NIST CSRC glossary; definition attributed there to CNSSI 4009-2022 and NISTIR 8011 Vol. 3). Microsoft’s Security Response Center uses a patch-centered definition: a zero-day vulnerability is a software flaw for which no official patch or security update has been released. Microsoft also notes that the vendor may or may not already know about the vulnerability (Microsoft Security Response Center, “Anatomy of a Security Update,” May 2022).
These definitions highlight two related ideas: the flaw may be unknown, or there may not yet be an official fix. “Zero-day” does not mean the vendor has had literally zero time to work on it, nor does it tell you by itself whether attackers are exploiting it.
What is the difference between a vulnerability and an exploit?
A vulnerability is a weakness in software or another system that an attacker could use. NIST defines a software vulnerability as a security flaw, glitch, or weakness in software code that could be exploited by an attacker (NIST CSRC glossary).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
An exploit is the action, technique, or mechanism that takes advantage of a vulnerability. In short, the vulnerability is the opening; the exploit is how someone attempts to use it. A zero-day exploit is the use of a vulnerability during the period before an official patch or security update is available, or against a flaw that was previously unknown.
Does every zero-day vulnerability lead to an attack?
No. A zero-day vulnerability can exist without being exploited. Microsoft says disclosure alone does not mean attacks will follow. Whether attackers choose to use a flaw can depend on factors such as how difficult it is to exploit, how widely the affected software is installed, and how reliably an exploit works (Microsoft Security Response Center).

The possible consequences also depend on the affected system, the attack paths available, and what an exploit could do. NIST’s framework for evaluating zero-day risk models unknown vulnerabilities using explicit assumptions, including a worst-case scenario; that is a risk-analysis model, not a claim that every real zero-day has the same likelihood or impact (NIST, “An Efficient Framework for Evaluating the Risk of Zero-Day Vulnerabilities”).
What should you do if your software has a zero-day vulnerability?
- Check the affected vendor’s current security advisory. Confirm whether your product and version are affected, whether exploitation is reported, and which mitigations or workarounds apply to your configuration. Advice can differ by version and environment.
- Apply a vendor-recommended mitigation or workaround if a patch is not available. These measures may reduce exposure or block known attack paths, but they do not repair the underlying vulnerability. Microsoft describes mitigations and workarounds for managing zero-day vulnerabilities in its guidance (Microsoft Learn, “Mitigate zero-day vulnerabilities”).
- Install the official update when the vendor releases it. Verify that the update applies to your product and version, then follow the vendor’s instructions. Microsoft’s guidance transitions a zero-day recommendation to an update when a patch becomes available (Microsoft Learn).
- Keep other software updated, too. Microsoft identifies applying software updates as the best general prevention for software exploits (Microsoft Learn, “Exploits and exploit kits”).
Can antivirus stop a zero-day exploit?
No generic antivirus product, VPN, or cleanup utility is established as a guarantee against all zero-day exploitation. Protection depends on the specific vulnerability and attack path. The source-backed response is to follow the affected vendor’s advice, use applicable mitigations while waiting for a fix, and install the official update once it is released. Microsoft’s general exploit guidance emphasizes keeping software updated, while its zero-day guidance addresses product-specific mitigations and updates (Microsoft Learn; Microsoft Learn).

How to read a zero-day security advisory
When checking an advisory, focus on the details that determine what action applies to you:
- Affected product and version: Make sure your installed software matches the versions listed.
- Exploitation status: Check whether the vendor says the vulnerability is known to be exploited; a vulnerability’s existence alone does not establish that attacks are occurring.
- Patch status: Determine whether an official update is available or whether the vendor currently recommends a mitigation or workaround.
- Configuration and instructions: Check whether the recommended workaround applies to your environment and follow the vendor’s steps exactly.
Patch availability, affected versions, and recommended mitigations can change. For a specific vulnerability or active incident, use the relevant vendor’s latest notice rather than relying on a general explainer.
