Depending on the selected view, its colors can represent Wi-Fi signal strength, signal-to-noise ratio, noise floor, or another wireless measurement. The colors are not literal temperature, and their meaning depends on the map’s metric and legend.
What a wireless heat map shows
A wireless heat map turns measurements or modeled estimates of radio-frequency conditions into a spatial view. A Wi-Fi coverage map, for example, can show where access-point signals are stronger or weaker across a floor. Other maps focus on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), noise floor, signal-to-interference ratio, or another chosen metric.
The specific metric matters: the same color on two maps may represent different values or conditions if their metrics, scales, or legends differ. Cisco’s WLAN deployment guidance identifies coverage, SNR, and noise-floor maps as distinct survey deliverables, with targets and legends that should be made clear.
How a wireless heat map is created
A heat map is produced as part of a wireless site survey or a planning workflow. The process typically starts with a floor plan calibrated to the real dimensions of the site. The surveyor defines the area and frequency bands in scope, identifies the access points or proposed hardware, chooses whether to collect measurements or model coverage, and uses survey software to render one or more metric-specific maps.

Survey data may be gathered using a computer and wireless adapter; the appropriate equipment depends on the software and computer being used. Cisco’s site survey checklist asks survey providers to identify the tools and adapters they use, along with the survey scope and targets.
In a predictive map, software estimates how radio signals may propagate through the mapped environment. Walls and other obstacles, their placement, and the modeling grid can affect estimated attenuation. A measured map, by contrast, reflects observations collected during the survey. Either way, the floor plan’s scale and the assumptions behind the map affect how useful its output is. Cisco warns that an incorrectly calibrated plan can compromise captured survey data; changing the scale afterward does not repair data collected at the wrong scale.

How to interpret a wireless heat map
- Identify the metric and legend. Check whether colors represent signal strength, SNR, noise floor, interference, or another measure, and note the units and color scale.
- Check whether the map is measured or predictive. A prediction depends on its modeling assumptions; a measured map reflects conditions observed during the survey.
- Confirm the scope. Look for the frequency band, access points included, mapped spaces, and the survey’s target threshold. There is no single RSSI or SNR target that applies to every use case; requirements depend on the devices and applications involved.
- Check the floor plan and assumptions. Confirm that the plan is calibrated and consider whether walls, obstacles, and access-point placement are represented appropriately.
Once those details are clear, a map can help locate potential coverage gaps and inform access-point placement or troubleshooting. A coverage view alone does not establish throughput, roaming quality, the source of interference, or application performance; those questions call for the relevant measurements and context.

A heat map describes specified measurements or estimates over a surveyed area; it is not a promise that wireless service will be identical at every point or moment. Wi-Fi conditions can change, and a modeled map may not capture every real-world obstacle or variation. Cisco notes in its version-specific Prime Infrastructure 3.10 user guide that WLAN coverage is dynamic and nondeterministic, so administrators cannot be certain of coverage at a particular spot at a particular moment.
