A wireless broadband router connects devices on a local network and directs their internet traffic through an internet connection supplied by an ISP. In a typical home setup, the router provides Wi-Fi; the broadband connection comes from the ISP. The router may be a standalone device, part of a modem-router gateway, or—when the term is used differently—a device that receives broadband over a mobile or fixed wireless service.

What does “wireless broadband router” mean?

Usually, it means a router that connects devices to a local network over Wi-Fi and routes their traffic to and from a broadband internet connection. The word “wireless” describes the link between the router and devices such as phones or laptops; it does not necessarily mean the ISP delivers internet to the home wirelessly.

Three things are involved:

  • Broadband service: internet access supplied by an internet service provider (ISP).
  • Router: equipment that connects devices on a local network and directs their network traffic.
  • Wi-Fi: the wireless local networking link the router can provide. Wi-Fi by itself is not an internet service and does not guarantee internet access.

The FCC distinguishes a broadband connection from the service delivered over it. Its Broadband Data Collection definition describes a connection as a wired line or wireless channel that enables information transfer to or from the internet above 200 kbps in at least one direction. That is an FCC reporting definition from 2022, not a current consumer speed recommendation. FCC: Fixed Broadband Subscription Definitions

How does a wireless broadband router work?

  1. The ISP provides internet access to the home or premises over an access connection.
  2. The router connects to that connection, directly or through a modem, and creates a local network.
  3. Devices join the local network, commonly over Wi-Fi.
  4. The router directs traffic between those devices and the internet connection.

The FTC describes a home Wi-Fi network as a wireless connection typically created by a router sending a signal through the air. That local Wi-Fi signal is only one part of the setup; internet access still depends on an ISP connection or another source of internet service. FTC: How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network

Is a router the same as a modem?

No. In a common home setup, a modem connects the ISP’s access line to the home equipment, while the router creates the local network and routes traffic among connected devices and toward the internet. The FCC has described a modem as connecting a user’s home router or other device to the internet. FCC 23-83

Some homes have separate modem and router units; others use a combined modem-router gateway. The word “router” alone does not establish whether a separate modem is included.

Does “wireless broadband” mean Wi-Fi or a wireless ISP connection?

It can mean either, depending on context. In the usual home-networking sense, broadband reaches the premises through an ISP connection and a router distributes it to devices over Wi-Fi. In another use, a fixed wireless or cellular service delivers broadband to the premises wirelessly, and the customer’s equipment may receive that service as well as provide a local network.

The FCC’s 2023 fixed/mobile descriptions appeared in a proposal seeking comment, not a final rule. In practical terms, fixed broadband primarily serves end users at fixed locations with stationary equipment, while mobile broadband is primarily used through mobile stations. Those labels describe service contexts; they do not make all devices called “wireless broadband routers” the same kind of equipment. FCC 23-83 proposal

A useful way to identify a device is to ask whether it only distributes an existing internet connection or also receives service from a wired, fixed-wireless, or mobile-network connection. A mobile hotspot or cellular router, for example, can receive service through a mobile network rather than simply relaying a wired broadband connection.

How is a router different from a Wi-Fi hotspot?

Both can create a local Wi-Fi network for nearby devices. A typical home router distributes an existing internet connection within a premises. A hotspot may create Wi-Fi while using a mobile-network connection as its source. The FCC notes that a person using a wireless router or Wi-Fi hotspot to create a personal network not intentionally offered for others’ benefit is not, in that regulatory context, providing a broadband internet access service. How do you secure a wireless broadband router?

Secure the router’s administration separately from access to its Wi-Fi network. The Wi-Fi password controls who can join the local network; the router administrator credentials control access to its settings. The FTC recommends changing default administrator credentials and network settings, enabling encryption, and checking for hardware and software updates. It also suggests considering whether to disable remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), which can weaken security. Menu names and available settings vary by manufacturer. FTC home Wi-Fi guidance and FTC: Securing Your Internet-Connected Devices at Home
