A volume serial number is an identifier associated with a formatted file-system volume—not the manufacturer’s serial number for the physical drive. In Windows, you can display it with vol C: or retrieve it in software with Microsoft’s volume-information API. It is not a dependable, globally unique hardware identity.
What a volume serial number identifies
Windows assigns a volume serial number when a hard disk is formatted, and Microsoft describes the value as generated by the file system at format time. It identifies the formatted volume rather than the physical storage device. Microsoft calls it an opaque value, so it should not be interpreted as a meaningful hardware code. Microsoft’s GetVolumeInformation documentation distinguishes the volume value from a manufacturer-assigned device serial number.
How to find a volume serial number in Windows
Use Command Prompt
- Open Command Prompt.
- Run
vol C:, replacingC:with the drive letter you want to check. - Read the displayed volume label and serial number, if they exist. Running
volwithout a drive argument reports the current drive.
These are the documented behaviors of the Windows vol command.
Retrieve it from software
Windows applications can call GetVolumeInformation, passing a volume root path such as C: and an output pointer for the volume serial number. The root path includes its trailing backslash. For volume information associated with a file handle, Microsoft also documents GetVolumeInformationByHandleW.

How it differs from other storage identifiers
| Identifier | What it refers to | How it is assigned or used | How to retrieve or recognize it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume serial number | A formatted file-system volume | Generated by the file system at format time; opaque and not necessarily related to hardware | vol or GetVolumeInformation |
| Physical disk serial number | The physical storage device | Manufacturer-assigned device property | Microsoft points to WMI Win32_PhysicalMedia.SerialNumber; see GetVolumeInformation documentation |
| Volume GUID path | A Windows path identifying a volume | Windows volume identifier designed to work independently of drive-letter assignments and labels | Conventionally written as \?Volume{GUID}; see Microsoft’s volume naming documentation |
A volume GUID path is distinct from the volume serial number. Drive letters can change, and volume labels can be absent or duplicated; Microsoft describes the volume GUID path as uniquely identifying a volume.
Is the volume serial number unique or a hardware fingerprint?
No. Do not rely on it as a globally unique identifier for hardware or as a dependable fingerprint across local, removable, cloned, and remote file systems. In a 2022 explanation, Microsoft engineer Raymond Chen quoted the documented definition: “The serial number is an opaque value generated by the file system at format time, and is not necessarily related to any hardware serial number for the device on which the file system is located.” He also notes that some remote file systems return zero for the volume serial number and file identifier. Read Chen’s explanation.

Does formatting change the volume serial number?
The documented definition ties generation of the value to format time. That does not establish a universal rule for every file system or every later volume operation, so do not assume that every reformat or volume change always changes it. The outcome depends on the file system and operation involved.
