A very long instruction word (VLIW) is a processor instruction format that bundles multiple independent operations together so they can run in parallel. The compiler decides which operations to bundle before the program runs, rather than leaving the processor to discover that parallel work at runtime.

How a VLIW instruction works

A VLIW compiler analyzes a program’s operations, their dependencies, and the processor’s available execution resources. It places operations that can safely run at the same time into fields in one instruction word. The processor then fetches that word and executes the bundled operations concurrently.

Operations that depend on one another cannot simply be scheduled together: a later operation may need the result of an earlier one. If there is not enough independent work to fill all the available fields, some fields may contain no-ops, which do no useful work.

“Very long” describes an instruction format that can contain multiple operation fields. It does not mean that every VLIW instruction has the same width; implementations vary.

How VLIW differs from superscalar processing

Aspect VLIW Typical superscalar design
Who schedules operations? The compiler, before execution Processor hardware, dynamically at runtime
Hardware scheduling burden Reduced relative to dynamic scheduling Hardware identifies and schedules independent operations
Compiler burden Greater, because it must account for dependencies and processor resources when bundling operations Less responsibility for runtime scheduling
Parallelism available Depends on how much independent work the compiler can find Depends on how much independent work the processor can discover at runtime

Moving scheduling into the compiler can simplify processor hardware, but it does not guarantee higher performance. Results depend on the processor, compiler, and workload; a program with few independent operations may not make effective use of the parallel slots.

Examples of VLIW processors

Examples named in a general overview include Analog Devices’ SHARC DSP and Texas Instruments’ C6000 DSP family. These are illustrative examples, not interchangeable designs or recommendations for current products. The specific model and its present status should be checked before relying on a product-level claim.
