A USB thumb drive is a small, removable storage device that saves files in flash memory and connects to a computer or other host through USB. “USB flash drive,” “thumb drive,” and “pen drive” are common names for the same kind of device. USB is the connection; flash memory is where the data lives.
How a USB thumb drive works
A typical thumb drive contains a USB connector, a controller, NAND flash memory, a circuit board, and supporting components. The connector provides the physical link to the host. The controller manages communication and reading and writing, and may also handle error correction and wear leveling. NAND flash stores the files and is non-volatile, so it retains data when the drive is unplugged.
Once connected, the computer or other host operating system presents the drive as storage for file operations. The USB interface provides communication and power; it is not the storage medium itself.
What people use thumb drives for
A thumb drive is useful when files need to be carried or moved without relying on a continuous internet connection. Common uses include:

Whether a particular use works depends on the host device, its software, and the drive’s format and capabilities.
Compatibility and speed
First check that the drive’s connector fits the host’s port. Common connector shapes include USB-A and USB-C. An appropriate adapter can address a mismatch, but the host and drive must still support the desired use.

The USB standard also affects potential transfer rates. USB-IF lists USB 3.2 rate categories of 5, 10, and 20 Gbps, and says backward-compatible products “will operate at lowest common speed capability.” These are interface rates, not a promise of the speed a specific thumb drive will achieve when copying files. Actual performance depends on the drive, host, workload, and other system limits. USB-IF: USB 3.2
Choosing a capacity and features
Choose based on how much data you intend to carry, the host’s connector, the performance needed for your workload, and whether you need encryption or password protection. SanDisk gives 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB as examples for collections and backups of increasing size; these are illustrative capacity options, not universal recommendations. Limitations and safe handling
Flash memory has finite write and erase cycles, and a portable drive can be lost, accessed by someone else, infected by malware, or suffer data corruption. A thumb drive is convenient, but it should not be the only copy of important files.
