A USB external drive is a separate storage device that connects to a computer through USB so you can store or move files. It sits outside the computer’s internal storage and can be connected or removed as needed. The term usually means an external hard disk drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD); some people also use “USB drive” to mean a small USB flash drive.
What “USB external drive” means
The phrase describes a device’s role and connection, not a single storage technology. The drive is external to the computer, and USB provides the link between the drive and a compatible host. NIST’s glossary groups external or removable HDDs and SSDs, along with flash-memory devices, under portable storage devices: NIST’s portable-storage-device definition.
External drive versus USB flash drive
An external HDD or SSD is generally a larger enclosure containing a storage drive, while a USB flash drive is a compact flash-memory device that plugs directly into a USB port. Both are portable storage, and both may connect over USB, which is why “USB drive” can be ambiguous. If the distinction matters, say “external HDD,” “external SSD,” or “USB flash drive.”
What a USB external drive is used for
A USB external drive adds storage capacity outside a computer and can carry files between compatible devices. You connect it to a host using its USB cable; the host’s USB port and the drive’s supported interface affect the connection’s potential performance. SanDisk describes external portable drives as connecting with a USB cable and generally appearing on the computer for use: SanDisk’s setup and troubleshooting guidance.

HDD or SSD: the main types
External drives commonly use either a hard disk drive or a solid-state drive. These are broad category differences, not guarantees about any particular model; actual speed, durability, and price vary by drive and connection.
| Type | General characteristics | Often suits |
|---|---|---|
| External HDD | Often offers generous capacity at a lower cost per unit of storage than an SSD, but has moving parts. | People prioritizing capacity and cost over frequent fast access or rugged portability. |
| External SSD | Typically faster and has no moving parts, which can be useful for frequent access and portable use. | People prioritizing responsiveness and a drive they carry or access often. |
Dell provides this general HDD-versus-SSD comparison in its overview of external USB drives.

What to check before connecting one
- Connector and interface: Check that the drive’s connector and supported USB interface work with a port on the computer or other host device. Exact compatibility and possible speed depend on both devices; consult their current specifications. Microsoft explains the host-device relationship and port capability in its USB in Windows FAQ, which discusses older USB revisions rather than setting a universal speed for every current connection.
- Setup: Many drives can be used for storage without separate software, but a particular device or computer may still require setup, formatting, or troubleshooting. Follow the drive maker’s instructions if it does not appear or work as expected.
- Safe removal: When you have finished using the drive, use the operating system’s safe-eject function before disconnecting it, as SanDisk advises in its setup guidance.
Is storing files on one external drive a backup?
Not by itself. If the external drive is the only place a file exists, it is not a second copy. SanDisk Support puts it plainly: “Moving files from a computer to an external drive is not a backup unless there are duplicate files stored on another device or location.” Keep another copy on a separate device or location if you need a backup.
