Today, the clearest answer is a Google Pixel: Google’s own branded phone family. Other brands also make Android phones with Google apps, but that does not make those phones Pixel devices or Google-branded phones.
What does “true Google phone” mean?
The phrase has been used to distinguish Google-branded phones from phones made by other companies that run Android. It does not have a formal technical or legal definition, and Google does not present it as an official category.
For the current product meaning, Google’s Store calls its phone family “Google Pixel” and lists Pixel 11 in its lineup. The models and availability shown can change over time and vary by region; see Google’s Pixel phone lineup for current details.
Is a Pixel a Google phone if another company helps make it?
Yes. Branding and physical manufacturing are separate questions. A phone can be a Google-branded Pixel even if a third-party company is involved in manufacturing it; that involvement does not make the phone the manufacturer’s branded model. It also would be inaccurate to assume Google physically makes every Pixel component.

That distinction was visible in the Pixel’s early coverage. In a 2016 review, TechCrunch described the Pixel XL as a Google phone while noting HTC’s manufacturing involvement. The review’s conclusion, “Nexus be damned, this is the true Google phone,” was the reviewer’s characterization—not a Google definition or policy: TechCrunch’s Pixel XL review.
Is every Android phone with Google apps a Google phone?
No. Android is used by phones from many manufacturers, and many offer Google apps and services. Those devices are Android phones, but they are not thereby Google Pixel phones. If you mean a phone made by Google as a product brand, Pixel is the clearest current answer.

Why did people call Pixel the “true” Google phone?
The wording grew out of an older debate about what counted as a “Google phone”: a handset supplied or branded by Google, or a device from another manufacturer that ran Google software. By the Pixel era, some reviewers used “true Google phone” to describe the closer integration of Google’s hardware, Android, and services. TechCrunch framed Pixel as a unified hardware-and-software experience and a purer Android experience, but that is editorial interpretation—not an official test a phone must pass.

If you are shopping, identify the exact Pixel model rather than relying on the phrase “Google phone.” Compare the features, software information, price, and availability for that model in your market. For accessories, check the specific model’s compatibility: support for a particular case or charging accessory should not be assumed to apply to every Pixel. Google provides a Pixel Phone hardware specifications reference, while its Store lists current phones and accessories.
